Amazon.co.uk Review

Do It Yourself proved exactly who was responsible for The Stone Roses' comeback album, the poorly received Second Coming. With its reliance on sturdy Led Zep riffs, and its worrying number of protracted guitar workouts, the Roses' swansong showed rather a close correlation to Do It Yourself--the debut, and only album from lead guitar virtuoso John Squire's post-Roses outfit. If this demonstrated anything telling after the acrimonious split of the Roses, it was that Squire liked to keep a firm grip on the reins. Certainly, the Britpop staple of "Love Is The Law" demonstrated that Squire hadn't lost it completely, but it was pleasingly ironic that the ex-busking singer Chris Helme--a musician that Squire drafted in, only to lose patience with after the album's release--composed the best track, the bruised lament of "Blinded By The Sun". Do It Yourself is a treat for air-guitarists, but after the wonder of the Roses, is a sad anticlimax. --Louis Pattison

Underrated 7 Jan 2003
Format:Audio CD
I have seen many reviews for this album, most of which seem to score it really low. I can only think that these people are Stone Roses fans that think that whatever John Squire does should resemble the Roses (don't get me wrong though, I'm a Stone Roses fan myself). In truth this album is a great mix of catchy guitar riffs and good (if slightly surreal at times) lyrics, and if given some time I'm sure you will grow to love. Stand out tracks are Blinded by the Sun, Suicide Drive, Love is the Law (great Squire solo ending) and Round the Universe which all make the album worthwhile. All I'm asking is you give this one a chance and don't just reject it because it's not the Stone Roses

Brilliant. 10 Oct 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is an exceptional album. I'm not a fan of The Stone Roses particularly, but the Seahorses' sound is quite different. A beautiful-sounding acoustic guitar (I believe played by singer Chris Helme) provides all the chords, backed by excellent drumming and bass work, and then of course we have Squire on lead guitar, constantly mesmerising us with an endless array of soaring melodic meanderings. I don't think he plays a single power-chord in the whole album - it's all single note stuff! This arrangement, when combined with the catchy, fun songwriting style, really works, and EVERY track on the album is fantastic. Chris Helme puts in a great vocal performance, his style fitting in perfectly. The production was apparently done by some big-name producer and you can really tell - it sounds very nice.

What a shame it was their only album...

Number 1 Album 21 April 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
'The Seahorses' not the world biggest known band, this should change, this album is fantastic. I bought it in 1997, I am now onto my third copy! Each track offers a different mood, with rock to jump around to and slower songs to chill to, you really can not go wrong! Chris Helme the lead singer has an excellent indie band voice with the guitar talent provided by stone roses John Squire, plus a song in there written by a Gallagher, a perfect mixture of indie at it's best!

Only one album!! Why?
This album is fantastic, there are a couple of chart hits on here and some other tracks would chart if they released em even now. Travesty they only did one album.

Such a good album...
... it's got everything, if you haven't heard this and your into the indie scene then you've missed out. Listen out for the guitar solo at the end of love is the law, awesome.

low rate is due to a my mistake.
I bought the CD because of a suggestion from a friend of mine and that music is not the one I like.

A shame they only did one album
Blinded by the sun is a classic tune, as is love is the law. So much here is either excellent or bordering on it.

Under-rated
The second album which Squire is credited to have written most of (even thought he did do most of TSR by himself). It falls victim, as it would, to being compared to the roses. Read more
