Great debut from an adventurous band,

This review is from: Do Easy - Home Of The Brave (Audio CD)
Stumbled upon this while reading about the Leeds Jazz scene. Took a chance and found it is excellent.Very fine playing on what is essentially a live album. Excellent ensemble work with all the individuals shining throughout. But what makes this a treat is the use of great tunes from westerns as a sturdy spine to the improvised playing. These tunes are so strong, so well known, even when reduced to snippets and riffs their familiarity catches the attention and draws you back to the overall theme. If I have one small doubt it is the couple of tracks using sample dialogue from the films. Much fun is had but, like many a joke, it really only stands the one listening. That said there ain't much of it and the CD is long, allowing 90% of its contents to be just damn fine music. I see there is a related band called A Dread Supreme doing dub versions of Coltrane favourites. Now that I just got to hear. Shame I live so far from Leeds.
