This volume contains six separate stories focussed on minor characters - some known and some new. This is a stark change from the heavy reading of the previous books. This may seem like a light interlude but all are part of the bigger picture and connected to the plot. One of these is a shocking twist indeed and all are expertly told.

There are guest artists for two of the stories but they both keep to the established conventions. This has the same high standards and it is great to see the art is given as much weight and freedom as the words.

An excellent Thumbs Up!

Fun Stories 21 Nov. 2009
By C. Kim - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
DMZ: The Hidden War is a nice change of pace. In this volume, the stories focus on other characters of DMZ, with only a glimpse of Matty and Zee in the background.

Much like the extras (mini travel guide) in DMZ volume two, Brian Wood explores other parts of Manhattan. Some of the stories shed light on how certain people lived before the war (i.e. Wilson). Other stories give an update on how a character, who is mentioned in previous issues, currently survives. By telling the stories of different characters, Wood represents multiple perspectives of the war. These little stories add more detail and verisimilitude to the series.

In a way, each story is like a teaser of a spin-off, which is exciting and interesting. However, I hope Brian Wood does not attempt to create a spin-off and I trust that he will not make one.

Enjoy this book.

A fine addition. 13 Sept. 2009
By C. Chauvet - Published on Amazon.com

Although this volume looks like another group of throw-away, half-finished story arcs, it is actually a fairly nice breakup of the overall narrative. Additionally, this has some of the best art in the series. Shame that there can't be a larger selection of people drawing in this world.

DMZ- Hidden Wars 20 Mar. 2009
By J. Mchann - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I should preface any remark with my exceptional regard for Brian Wood in producing what I consider to be unsurpassed work with the DMZ series. But this volume falls short of actualizing the obvious intent of showcasing the interesting characters populating Matty's world. I carefully picked over the previous volumes, allowing extra time to take in the art and story....savor it if you will. Vol 5 art is messy... actually some of Vol4 was kind of mess too. Anyway, It's still worth buy..but it isn't as good as others in the series.

Side stories of a civil war 26 Dec. 2008
By Max Bartley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I was a bit worried about this TPB because Matty wasn't in it, but upon finishing I was very happy I'd gotten past my worries. The artists involved use very emotional styles. Perfect for everyone that has followed the DMZ so far.

Good short story collection 18 July 2010
By Rob Shamas - Published on Amazon.com

Good collection, I hope to see another similiar instalment that fills out the DMZ world and focuses on other factions or gang leaders that have been mentioned thruoghout the series thus far.
