Septem Voices are a Russian female-fronted, symphonic/Gothic band. As well as having an excellent female singer, they also have a female keyboard player and a female violinist. This makes them pretty unusual - and the violin is not only played to a very good standard, but also integrates very well with the overall sound and sets the band apart from most others.

This album came as a very refreshing change, after listening to the latest Nightwish album which I found a disappointment. Septem Voices don't go for distracting male vocals, overdone orchestral arrangements and shedloads of choirs: they are much closer to rock. And that is confirmed by some clips of the band on youtube, where the band is dressed in jeans rather than the latest offerings from the Gothic shops in Camden! That said, I would personally dress them in more conventional Gothic garb for bigger gigs - which they deserve.

The songs are tuneful, with good chord progressions. Being sung in Russian rather than English, the lyrics are rendered incomprehensible to most audiences in Western Europe. But on the other hand, it prevents the songs becoming over-familiar; at most gigs it's impossible to hear the words of unfamiliar songs anyway, so whether the Russian is much of a drawback is questionable.

The sound quality of this album - which I guess was recorded on a small budget - is truly excellent. I hope this young band do well. If you like the samples, I would simply say: buy it!
