3.0 out of 5 stars Don't forget to breathe, 1 Jun 2009
The research in this book seems solid, but the style is hard to take. On the first page, Dregni evokes Django's birthplace:

"...the land was so flat it gave the impression one could see to the ends of the earth. The wet wind whipped down from the Atlantic unimpeded in its cold fury. Riding on the wind came dark rains that seemed never-ending, turning day into night for months on end until one prayed for even the weakest rays of sun..."

Indeed. Belgium is flat. In winter, it's cold, wet, windy and flat. I shall persevere, but 317 pages of this breathless prose will be hard going.
