31 tracks in 61 minutes isn't usually my thing, yet this DJ Kicks CD has momentum and balance: moving from Black Secret Technology-era darkness at the beginning, to the almost child-like simplicity of Scratcha Diva's "Jelly Roll", to more ragga-influenced tracks like "Move Down Low" by Grievous Angel.

There's a bit of an RnB-ish lull in the proceedings mid-album, but "normal" service is resumed around about track 21.

Along with 5 : Five Years Of Hyperdub, this is as good a showcase of dubstep as I think you could hope to find - covering labels such as Werk Discs, Rush Hour and Hyperdub and artists including Ikonika, Digital Mystikz and The Bug. No Burial though, which might surprise some.

If this doesn't get you up on you on your feet at some point you are stone-cold dead - simple as that, I reckon. A must-buy. Cheered up this reviewer's Monday night no end.

I was expecting something akin to the interesting and highly musical albums by Burial, which was the wrong way to approach this.
This is a compilation of rhythm-led dancefloor tunes and as such is pretty mindless. The sequencing isn't particularly clever either - mostly pretty random. No build. It doesn't help that the opening track and a number of others are of such incredible banality that I hated this album from the first play and only like it a little more since then. Of the Kicks series I can't name a more artless and dumb compilation except perhaps the early headbangers.

Promotional copy with interruptions! 14 May 2013

This copy of the CD had voice laid over the tracks. It's obviously a promotional copy, which is okay (though the voice ruins the transitions between songs)--but I wish the seller had included this in the product description. Not a great buying experience.
Mesmerizing 19 Jun 2011

Kode9 will probably be remembered more for his statement on Burial remixes, rather than on well-honed skill and brilliant layering. Which is a shame because Kode9's DJ-Kicks is nothing short of compelling. DJ-Kicks releases are mix series that are merely exercises in DJ skill. In a sense it's a little more challenging to create a successful remix with a lot of factors to keep in mind. Kode9, although he didn't create the majority of these tracks, is able to bring his seamless execution of an amalgam of electronic styles to the material. It's an aggresive portrait of sounds that's bound to be confusing on first listen, but after repeated listens it's consistently entertaining. The album's sonic palette is made up of post-dubstep, R&B, and other styles that are tangled up in today's UK scene. Which obviously is no surprise, but Kode9 is able to show these styles with the excess fat taken off and replaced with his own spin to sharpen things up. DJ-Kicks has always been a must-listen mix series for the "hip" listener of the modern dance scene and Kode9's is no exception.
