Product Description

Review

'This is a pragmatic text, steeped with the authors' experience. … Short of having Adolfo Bronstein universally available to sort out dizzy people, this book is a very acceptable addition to a neurologist's armamentarium for dealing with a common clinical problem.' Advances in Clinical Neuroscience & Rehabilitation

'The first edition of this 200-page book with a video CD certainly serves as a very welcome and highly reliable guide for the clinician confronting the difficult and broad field of dizziness. … As the title indicates, this book takes an, above all, practical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of different vertigo/dizziness syndromes. Practising clinicians can quickly acquire an understanding of the physiological essentials of the vestibular system. The book is clearly written and adequately illustrated. … this is a thoroughly readable and highly recommendable book.' European Neurology

Book Description

This book offers a novel approach to the diagnoses of dizziness, with chapters organized by clinical presentations. Differential diagnoses, history taking, clinical examination and treatment are covered. Common disorders are highlighted, with brief coverage of rarities, and a useful CD shows the clinical examination, positioning and exercises for vestibular rehabilitation.

Maybe I was born too early or maybe i should have gone to my anatomy lessons;either way there were a large number of things new to me in this book.It is interesting,readble-I've read it 3 or 4 times so far- it makes more sense on reading again, beautifully written and very practical.
I was motivated to get this book partly because of articles I've seen by Prof Bronstein in BMJ and elsewhere in GP-land and partly because of a patient's annoyance that I had missed a potentially serious central disorder(- thankfully no serious problem resulted) and a persistent feeling of unease when confronted by patients with vertigo/dizziness.
Since reading the book I have seen several patients with posterior canal BPV and have been confident of their diagnoisis and been able to offer Epley manoeuvre and been pleased with the results.Patients definitely appreciate this, it costs nothing, has no side effeects and is a good GP skill. I feel more confident about seeing persistent vertigo patients- but just havent seen any since.
There is a still the issue of deciding which is the direction of the fast phase of vertigo- particularly the rotary ones and experience will help.
This book will make you feel more confident and be more useful and make fewer mistakes and I really recommend it to all generalists

I am half way through reading this book and finding it readable and very helpful. It is to the point and written to directly help you manage patients not for theoretical musing. There are lots of tables of differentials for symptom patterns making it a useful quick reference in clinic when struggling for direction. It is small so portable as a reference guide to have with you. It has taught me a lot and I will happily continue to read the rest on the tube on the way to work.
