Mastroianni really could turn his hand to any role. In this film he is a world-weary Sicilain nobleman, scheming to get rid of his wife, so that he can marry his attractive young cousin, played by Stefania Sandrelli. His solution? To make his wife commit adultery, so that he can kill her on the pretext that it is a crime of honour.
This is one of the great classics of Italian cinema, and I highly recommend it, especially to admirers of Mastroianni and Sandrelli. Also to anyone who is interested in Sicily. Lovers of the Montalbano Tv series might find some of the kinds of sets familiar!
