Review

An essential guide to the British monarchy for those who should already know everything but don't. Written with a lively wit but crammed with factual information, this is the perfect way to mug up on your British history (The Oldie)

One way we remember history is by means of a good yarn... Flude's gem of a book works on this premise - that it is the human stories of our monarchs we remember - and he breaks them down into delightful bite-sized chunks (Family History Monthly)

Product Description

The tales of the various monarchs of Britain are some of the most interesting in our history. From Henry VIII and his six wives and Edward VIII's abdication to some of our lesser known and mythical monarchs such as King Arthur, "Divorced, Beheaded, Died..." takes you on a gallop through the history of Britain's monarchs from the legendary King Brutus, through the houses of Tudor and Stuart, and up to the Windsors, including the major monarchs of Scotland and Wales. Discover the sticky end that befell Edward II, the story of the teenage queen of England who reigned for less than a fortnight, and find out whether Macbeth really was a king of Scotland. Presented in an accessible, chronological format, "Divorced, Beheaded, Died..." will fill all those gaps in your history knowledge, together with some fascinating and amusing facts that are guaranteed to entertain any history enthusiast.

A very interesting book but not one to sit and read all at one go, better to pick it up and read a bit and then put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars one of my first kindle experiences 25 Aug. 2011
By doolish
Format:Kindle Edition
Bought this as my first down loaded book ever. I have always been a keen but amateur historian and this sounded fun to read on holiday. I completely enjoyed the easy flow of the book, keeping each king or queen to a paragraph made them easy but memorable. Also some of the lesser known stuff such as Cannut and the Jews.
I would recommend this to people who's children are daunted by the tomes that are normally presented to school kids to learn about our past. This is much more user friendly and will be sticking with me as a reference or just for a cheeky read from time to time.

I hope to find more like this as i go along.

5.0 out of 5 stars LITTLE GEM 31 May 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I loved this book and would highly recommend it. Parts of the The Editors Introduction best sum it up for me - 'By deliberately keeping the entries in this book short and to the point, we hope to provide an accessible and entertaining overview of the sweep of British history that will perhaps renew a dormant interest in the subject amongst those readers who have not picked up a history book for a while..................we hope you enjoy reading these bite-sized chucks' of history'.

As I've recently taken back up an interest in, a subject I thoroughly enjoyed at school, this is perfect for me. Concise and succinct it has helped me with the order of successions. I found the bite-sized chucks just right and I got some good ideas for additions to my (already bulging) reading list! Well written and an enjoyable read.
