Only album no5 of her 20-year career and it maintains her pattern of "making it new" each time. This time, it is a close collaboration with her fellow French star, guitar hero Matthieu Chedid ("M")who produced, recorded and arranged the whole thing. The first thing to note is her vocal styling - the squeakiness in her voice has gone and she sings in lower register to great effect in "Chet Baker" and other songs. "Des que je te vois" is the best dancefloor track you'll hear this year - except you probably won't hear it outside of France. It is dance music as it should be - a great groove created by the musicians, superb layered vocals, hypnotic rhythm, with no electronic mumbo-jumbo. The title track is a perky, addictive pop-tune, and "Incendie" has another beautifully enunciated vocal. "La Bataille" is an organ-led romp like some of the ska music in the early 80s, and "la Melodie" has a beautiful, lilting melody over a reggae beat. "Jackadi" is a folky, Joni Mitchell type sound and it and "Irresistiblement" have harmonies that wouldn't sound out of place on a Crosby, Stills and Nash album. A couple of ballads, the achingly beautiful "Junior Suite" and "les Revenants" show what a great song interpreter Paradis is. She paid tribute to M's production saying he allowed the songs to grow organically. That's true - they sound very simple and uncluttered, but repeated listens reveal there is a lot going on - it was several listens before I noticed the banjo in "La Bataille". It's a short album at just over 30 minutes - my one criticism is that with the quality of musicians in this band they could have been allowed a bit more freedom. That was confirmed when I was lucky enough to see this band in action in Paris recently when they really let loose.Read more ›

Vanessa has come up trumps again as she matures her voice just gets better and better & this is a fantastic album, probably her best yet with not a duff song to be seen. With tracks that really exploit her unique vocals from husky chain smoking wine bar siren to childlike innocence. Noteable tracks are the playful "les Piles" with the equally fabulous M, "Chet Baker", "Melodie" which is so chilled its almost reggae & "Irresistiblement" which always makes me smile. Such an immense talent Vanessa proves that you really can have it all.Highly reccomended.

It's been a while since Vanessa Paradis was on the UK radar in any capacity other than as Johnny Depp's partner. Divinidylle, only her second album since 1992, suggests that perhaps she should be. The erstwhile model/actress/whatever still has more than a touch of the ingenue about her, though she has added thin huskiness to a vocal repertoire formerly limited to thin reediness. Paradis swathes herself in gorgeous melodies and a breezy, layered soft rock aesthetic that fits her exquisitely. Particularly on the irresistible Dès Que J'te Vois and the deft Chet Baker, her lightness of touch is positively - but always charmingly - decadent.
