This is THE BOOK to buy if you are an aspiring diver. If you have no idea how diving works & want to know more; if you perhaps have done a 'try-dive' in the past; or you did a few dives one holiday years ago & have forgotten all the information since, then this is the perfect place to start.

The book starts right at the beginning with the history & development of diving, which I skipped over to start with as I was more wanting to know how to dive, but I have since gone back & read it. The book is laid out like one of the Eyewitness travel guides where you can skip ahead to sections if you wish. I pretty much read it from cover to cover in a matter of days. It explains all the science behind the equipment & all the science [physics specifically] which affects you physically. I was always rubbish at physics but in a practical situation like this, it's easy to pick up what you need to know. All of the equipment is discussed in detail, don't worry if you think 'I'll never remember all this', you will! It's once you start actually using it that it'll become second nature to you.

The chapters are as follows:

The History of Diving
Getting Started
Equipment
The Diving Environment
Diving Skills
Going Diving
Underwater Life
Places to Dive

All in all this is a beautifully produced, very informative & comprehensive guide. Produced to the usual high standards that I have come to expect from Dorling Kindersley guides. Excellent quality photographs & the content shows off that the author really knows his stuff. I especially liked that the text remained neutral & didn't try to persuade you to dive with either PADI or BSAC etc but did give you the information to decide for yourself.

In my shop I try to keep at least 4 or 5 of these on the shelf as they absolutely fly out the door.
Fabulous book, I think every diver should have one!

I love DK Eyewitness travel guides, they're thorough and colourful. But I wanted a guide book that would recommend all the best or most popular dive sites around the world, I was hoping for a guide book broken down in oceanic regions of the world with a single or double page of places to dive, recommended dive sites, what you can expect to see there, etc. Instead, the first three quarters of the book is about diving (equipment, course, boyuancy, technics) all things you would have learned in your dive course in the first place - so absolutely useless. The last quarter of the book remotely attempts to do what I wanted, but it's nowhere as good as what I had in mind. I'll just have to do my own research and dive all over the world and give them the content for a good Scuba Diving Guide.
