4.0 out of 5 stars All the pieces coming together., 14 May 2001
By A Customer
"The Divine Deception" is required reading for anyone interested in the Turin Shroud, the Knights Templar and the beliefs of the Cathars. Keith Laidlers latest contribution adds a few more pieces to the puzzle of the ancestry of Jesus, the early Christian church, the mysteries surrounding the Languedoc and of course, that great enigma, the Shroud. After reading about Nicholas Allens research, one would like to kick oneself at the simplicity of his proven solution to the image on the cloth. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak and Heavily Borrowed from Other Sources, 10 Dec 2001
The argument Laider weaves is disconnected and weak. The head worship of Egypt (if there ever was one) appears to be an extremely poor assumption for Laidler's thesis. Methinks the turin shroud is a fake - that's all - just a fake. Like many others in the past and many more to come.

The first half of the book seems to borrow heavily from other sources. I found nothing new in this book concerning the egyptian /hermetic origins of Christianity. I agree with the argument - just didn't find anything new in this book. You're better off reading some excellent scholarship like R. Eisenman or B. Theiring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shrouded in a little less mystery?, 22 April 2001
By A Customer
Keith Laidler's scholarly yet highly readable book takes us step-by-step to a remarkable conclusion. We are spared the usual padding one has come to expect from books on this subject, which unfortunately are to be found on bookshelves under the headings of "New Age" or "Paranormal". Laidlaw keeps firmly on the path of proven fact, resisting the temptation to wander into speculation. Perhaps surprisingly he has missed an opportunity to confirm part of his hypothesis, as a relic currently in a Rome church actually lends support to his conclusion. He'll kick himsef when he finds out! One of those books that can start a reader on a lifetime of further research.
