Product Description

Product Description

In the European Union the balance of power between Brussels and the Member State governments is an ongoing matter of contention. With each treaty amendment during the Union's first 50 years, EU competences have grown, and each time critics have questioned whether the national governments are being weakened. The Treaty of Lisbon is now being considered as a replacement for the ill-fated European Constitution, and the atmosphere is one of heightened sensitivity. This timely book examines the Lisbon Treaty to determine whether the current 'dividing lines' between Member State and Union authority will be affected. Taking a broad view of what the EU is and what its members are trying to accomplish collectively, the author contrasts these aspirations for Europe with the insistence of each Member State that it must never lose its national sovereignty.

Book Description

Focussing on the current 'dividing lines' between Member State and Union competences, and whether the new treaty amendment will shift them toward more central power in Brussels, Stephen C. Sieberson examines the Treaty of Lisbon to determine its impact on the division of authority within the European Union.

The Treaty of Lisbon 7 April 2010

Format:Hardcover
This is a really helpful and up to date book on the Treaty of Lisbon. I am using it for my dissertation at the moment and I believe it would be useful guide for nearly any Law student.

I am very interested in understanding the significance of the Lisbon Treaty and its impact upon the previously existing treaties. In my research, I did not find many useful materials. There is an abundance of propoganda that I, as a Professor, have no interest. However, this publication, as a few [and I emphasise few], stood above the mediocre writings in this area. I found it useful for my work, in preparing a synopsis of the Lisbon Treaty. The "dividing line between the Union and the Member States" is almost intractable. This book provides a certain level of clarity to identify the division of power, and serves as a platform for further study of this key issue.
