Much has been said and written about the Versatility of Musician Andre Previn. Usually such comments focus on his cross-genre performance abilities. Something which is often overlooked, and which I believe this new recording demonstrates, is his Multiple Talents in the single field of Contemporary 'classical' or 'serious' Music. This Remarkable recording demonstrates Previns Phenomenal Talents as Songwriter, 'the giraffes go to Hamburg' is Easily the finest piece of Song writing of the last decade (surpassing even Previn's own song cycles for Sylvia McNair & Kathleen Battle). And also as a symphonic Composer. Diversions, which is reminiscent in places of Previn's Opera 'A Streetcar Named Desire', not to mention Rachmaninov, Vaughn Williams, Walton and even Shostakovich, is In my humble opinion, a Masterpiece, and deserves to be heard often. To further prove his Understanding Of the symphony Orchestra He arranges two songs, Previously for voice and Piano, for that most demanding of ensembles, 'Sally Chisum Remebers Billy The Kid' & 'Vocalise'. Of Course, Previn, The finest symphonic conductor of the last Century, takes up the baton, for these premiere recordings himself. Previn is A fine Pianist, as anyone who's heard him play Poulnec Beethoven, or Mozart can attest. And indeed his playing on this recording is testament to this fact. It is, nonetheless, regrettable that He chooses not to include any of his solo piano music on this recording. I do not believe there is any other musician alive who can do what Andre Previn can - And this Record proves it.
