Praise for DIVERGENT:
“A taut and shiveringly exciting read! Tris is exactly the sort of unflinching and fierce heroine I love. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.” Melissa Marr, bestselling author of Wicked Lovely
“DIVERGENT is a captivating, fascinating book that kept me in constant suspense and was never short on surprises. It will be a long time before I quit thinking about this haunting vision of the future.” James Dashner, author of ‘The Maze Runner’
“Well-written and brilliantly executed, DIVERGENT is a heart-pounding debut that cannot be missed. Tris stands out in her action-packed, thrilling, and emotionally honest journey to determine who she wants to be in a society that demands she conform. It’s dystopian fiction at its best!” Kiersten White, New York Times bestselling author of PARANORMALCY

A brilliant idea - totally gripping!!,
By
This review is from: Divergent (Paperback)
Divergent is based around a surreal world divided into factions. Each faction is different and it's "members" have unique qualities and personality traits. There are five factions: Candor, Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless and Amity. At the age of 16 all children must undertake an aptitude test to determine which faction they are most suited to - But they don't have to pick this one. So what is divergent? Well, the main character Beatrice or "Tris" as she is most referred to as is a divergent - this means that instead of suiting only one faction she suits a number of factions. This means she must choose between the faction her family belong to, Abnegation or another faction - but deserting her family would be the ultimate betrayal. As Tris decides which faction she will choose she undertakes a number of initiation trials which are completely gripping - what a page turner! The relationships between the other initiates are explored and sometimes they are more enemies than friends. Divergent is a brilliant read, I loved the new ideas and the new world that had been created. Tris is a fun, intelligent character with lots of wit - I thought she was fantastic and really surprising at times. I read this in two sittings it was that good - I'd more than recommend this book to both young adults and adults alike. If you loved "The Hunger Games" then you'll definitely love this, but if you haven't heard of that either then give them both a go!

A good debut novel,
This review is from: Divergent (Paperback)
Actually, 3.5I rarely enjoy YA novels, but given the recent attention that was drawn to Divergent with the goodreads awards and all I decided to give it a chance, partially because I want to keep in touch with whatever these crazy kids are reading today. I'm glad I did. Divergent takes place in a fictional Chicago, a society the members of which are divided into 5 factions, according to their personality trait that prevails. (Amity for peacefulness, Candor for honesty, Dauntless for bravery, Abnegation for selflessness, Erudite for intelligence). At age 16, all members take an uptitude test to find out which faction they are more suited for, and after that it's up to them to freely decide where they want to belong. Divergent bears most of the genre conventions that, in my opinion make the majority of YA novels too simple and light-minded too be taken seriously - a first person narrative of a young girl, who uses simple language to describe the dystopian world she lives in and all the bad that happen to her, her simplistic moral code of a 10-year- old, the crush she has who loves her back and she will only begin to slightly suspect in the middle of the book, OK you know the type. In other words, welcome to YA novels, leave your subtlety at the lobby. However, Divergent in the same time questions these conventions. Beatrice Prior isn't a beautiful girl that she alone doesn't aknowledges it - she is average looking. She isn't weak at all- she protects the others and doesn't need saving. She isn't brainlessly righteous - she disputes the simplistic moral code according to which she is brought up and forms her own principals. In other worlds, this book stands out of the big pile of YA novels that appear everywhere like a plague. I would give it a higher rate but the plot doesn't get going until page 415, so the book feels like a preparation for the actual story in the second book.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
It's very rare that I mange to read a full 500 page book in one day, no matter how hooked I am. I have a six-year old daughter who demands much of my time and rarely lets me read as she gets on with something quietly. So the fact I read Divergent in its entirety the day it arrived speaks volumes. Ok, I'll admit it, I enlisted the help of the unpaid babysitter who sits in the corner (TV), ordered takeaway so I didn't have to cook, abandoned any kind of housework and bribed my daughter continuously to let me read just a few more pages. Even she became obsessed with my reading progress that day asking `How many pages have you read now Mummy' and appointed herself my official reading cheerleader. That's how good this book is. Once started you won't be able to stop until you have devoured every breath taking word.I'm going to refrain from hashing over the plot, I couldn't do it's intricacies justice and really don't want to inadvertently give anything away that will spoil the book, so readers can go into it the same way I did. What I will say though is that Veronica Roth's dystopian world is exquisitely built with complexities and detailing that will force the reader right into the very heart of it from the moment they pick up the book. It's clever, exciting, brutal, jaw droppingly shocking and intense. I adored lead character, Tris, the underdog who comes into her own. She's brave, loyal and intelligent, fierce and compassionate in equal measures. Then there's Four (Tris's coach in the new life she chooses) the HOTTEST, most swoonworthy guy ever. I'm slightly obsessed by him, I've even dreamt about him and I completely fell in love with him. The romance between Tris and Four is solid, real and beautiful. It developes at the right pace, it has the right amount of intensity and passion, yet it doesn't overwhelm the story at all. Divergent is an action packed and exciting read set in a brutal and violent world after all and the balance between action and romance is perfect. To sum up, I LOVED this book big time. I found it hugely addictive and couldn't part from it for a second I was that engrossed and involved in it. I think I read it with my eyes on stalks, my mouth hanging open and with my heart pounding throughout, It's the most exciting book I've read for a long time. The final pages set up fantastically for the sequel and the wait for it is going to be sheer torture. Seriously, if there is one book you must buy this year it's Divergent, I whole-heartedly recommend it and then some. Just make sure you have a spare few hours because I'm warning you, once you start you won't be able to stop.
