Book Description

No. 1 New York Times bestsellers DIVERGENT, INSURGENT and ALLEGIANT in collector’s trilogy set.

DIVERGENT – a major motion picture in 2014.

Sixteen-year-old Tris has been forced to make a terrible choice. In a divided society where everyone must conform, Tris does not fit.
So she ventures out, alone, determined to find out where she truly belongs. Tris can trust no one in this brutal new world, but she is drawn to a boy who seems to both threaten and protect her.

Tris has survived a brutal attack on her home, but she has paid a terrible price. Wracked by grief and guilt, she becomes reckless as she struggles to accept her new future. If Tris wants to uncover the truth, she must be stronger than ever as more shocking choices and sacrifices lie ahead.

The faction-based society that Tris once believed in is shattered – fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she's known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she will find a simple new life, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties and painful memories.

But Tris's new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature – and of herself – while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.

4.0 out of 5 stars love this series 3 Dec. 2013
By Nicole
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
this is a really good series that recommend to all teens and young adult readers. but you properly already know this since your considering buying all three books at once. So I'm going to tell you that this box-set is great in quality and mine came with a guide to divergent. I had already read the first two books and I bought this box-set because i wanted to own all the books in hardback with the original cover (+ I wanted to finish the series). the reason I only gave this product 4 stars is because i didn't enjoy the last book in this series as much a the first two.

I always tend to read books that my daughter (12 years old) reads so that we can have a chat about it. After the whole Harry Potter series, I've introduced her to classics such as The Outsiders, Taming the Star Runner and other S.E. Hinton's books, to real life accounts such as The Freedom Writers Diaries, and to what I would define as modern classics such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games, which we both loved.
The first book, Divergent, is enough fun. After all, it's about a young girl who overcomes her shyness and physical weakness through hard work and pure determination. She is a bit winy for my taste, but it's ok. I did find the whole factions system absolutely ludicrous, but this is a work of fantasy so I can get over it.
Book 2, Insurgent, on the other hand, is mostly religious propaganda about self sacrifice, surrounded by constant winging, backstabbing and lovers' quarrels... I did find it really irritating and before I was halfway through it I figured out the end of Book 3...
Book 3, Allegiant, again, a book full of subtle religious propaganda about self sacrifice. Not only that, it changes supposedly intelligent characters into idiots who make very stupid decisions.... Again, lovers' quarrels are a constant, as well as winging and self pity. Plus, I found the explanation of the whole Faction systems, the meaning of being Divergent and the whole Purity War absolutely incongruous.
My daughter agrees with me, she did find the last 2 books quite annoying.
I see this trilogy as a weak attempt to imitate The Hunger Games, a trilogy which, on the other hand, I thought was well written, well planned and well developed.
My advise is, read Divergent for fun if you're bored and have nothing else to read, but don't bother with the rest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Divergent is a brilliant story!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 29 Mar. 2014

Divergent, is set in the future where society is split into 5 factions: erudite (intelligence), amity (friendship), candor (honesty), abnegation (selflessness) and dauntless (bravery). they are split into these factions in order to avoid war and chaos so they can live in peace. Beatrice Prior is a 16 year old from abnegation. when you are 16 you take the aptitude test at school this tells you which faction you should be in however it is your choice. when she has her test her results are inconclusive. she has an aptitude for abnegation, dauntless and erudite this means she is what they call Divergent, being Divergent is a dangerous and powerful thing as you cant fit into one category, the divergent are hunted down and killed. she has been trying to fit into the abnegation lifestyle for years now but she can't find a way to follow it. erudite is abnegations enemy faction. but... she has always been fascinated with the brave people from dauntless. so at the choosing ceremony she is faced with a decision abnegation and her family or leave them forever and be dauntless. she chooses dauntless where she makes friends and fights through initiation. in dauntless she meets four. he's only 2 years older than her but he's also her instructor. they fall in love with each other. in dauntless Tris changes her name to Tris. she has to fight to hide her divergence and protect her life. the problem is when the head of erudite Jeanine Mathews starts to reveal the tricks up her sleeves and the new serums she has been working on.
Divergent is an amazing story that you literally can't put down. it is action packed and an emotional rollercoaster. I hope you enjoy the ride because it is going to be the most epic thing you have ever read. p.s.

4.0 out of 5 stars Divergent Trilogy Review 22 Jun. 2014
I first read this book a few months before the film was announced and I have loved this book since the very first page.
It does, admittedly, take a while before you fully grasp everything and wrap your head around the information you are and aren’t given.
The first few chapters are a little bit of a drag for many readers as the author talks about events and factions as if you already know what they are; but once the book gets going, boy do it get going!

Tris (Beatrice) Prior is a bit of an annoyance. Roth tries to write Tris’ character by adding selfishness or possible cowardice laced into the pages, but as many readers know, authors don’t write characters, the characters write themselves.
Having said that, this book is an amazing read and Roth has really outdone a lot of books out there on the market.

For me, Divergent is the beginning and ending of Tris and Four’s story.

The second book, ‘Insurgent’ suffers from second book syndrome, however, the self-pity and the feel you get of wanting to slap the protagonist in the face doesn’t last that long in the second book, it’s over pretty quickly and the book comes to life.
The third book, ‘Allegiant’ is a bit of a let-down, with the ending worse than that of the ‘Hunger Games’. This is my opinion. (No offence to anyone!)
It hurts me to say this about the Divergent Series because Divergent and Insurgent are both really great books and the third book had such potential to make one of the best trilogies I have ‘ever’ read. Sadly, the ending was the biggest let down.

However, Divergent is and always will be one of my favourite books.

Roth has written a book which has action, romance and that all great dystopian factor.
