5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating pictorial review of Peak District mining, 4 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Peak District Mining and Quarrying (Archive Photographs: Images of England S.) (Archive Photographs: Images of England S.) (Paperback)
Many local history books tend to be very turgid reports of years of research but here is one that is not! The authors have kept the written sections short and to the point which makes this an easy to read book. They are clearly very interested and knowledgable but do not spend too much time on technical detail of how mining was carried out; they also give a interesting social angle throughout. Each section is illustrated with plenty of black and white images of mines, both underground and on the surface. I have visited a number of the surface remains for myself but this book really brought them to life and made me realise the true scale of mining in the region. It has left me wanting to delve into the subject more deeply, how many local history books do that! The only improvement, in my opinion, would be to include one or more maps showing the locations of remains. If you have even a passing interest in industrial archaeology, I think you will enjoy this book.
