To me, this film is a masterpiece. It combines a creative, unique visual style with an entertaining story, and still manages to transmit important messages in the meantime. The story, while compelling, is not exceptional: it employs a myriad of tropes that have been tried and tested to provide an interesting plot: the group of friends of diverse ethnicities, the time-travel adventure, real-world characters, a love story, rags to riches, you name it. However these elements aren't randomly thrown in: they are carefully weaved together to manifest the social reality of the Hungarian district where the story takes place: issues such as prostitution, gambling, ethnic tensions, corruption and violence are all exposed as the plot develops, without ever making this feel like a documentary. The music, while not remarkable, gains points for the originality and fits perfectly with the film's style and story, providing rhythm and contributing to the sensory fest that this film provokes. The end result is an experience that is hard to forget and well worth a rewatch or two, to uncover amusing details that one might have missed previously.
