Product Description

Product Description

Expert practical advice from an experienced race engine builder on how to build an ignition system that delivers maximum power reliably. A lot is talked about ignition systems and there is a bewildering choice of expensive aftermarket parts, which all claim to deliver more power. Des Hammill cuts through the myth and hyperbole and tells readers what really works, so that they can build an excellent system without wasting money on parts and systems that simply don't deliver. Ignition timing and advance curves for modified engines is another minefield for the inexperienced, but Des uses his expert knowledge to tell readers how to optimize the ignition timing of any high-performance engine.

If you have bought Des Hammill's books before you may have noticed that a lot of information is recycled between books. This is no exception. Most of what is in this book is also in his book about tuning 1275 A series engines (an excellent book). I bought this book to fill gaps in my knowledge on the subject of ignition systems. While this book has answered some questions it does not contain information on less common distributors; such as some bosch distributors that use vacuum advance or do not employ a mechanical advance.

I get the impression that the author has just written about the distributors he is familiar with and not gone into an awful lot of detail. It is useful however for giving a general guidance and some good figures for different combustion chambers / engine specifications so a base idle and total timing figure can be arrived at. To someone with little knowledge of ignition systems on older vehicles (or at all) then this book would give an excellent knowledge base; to someone with an already healthy knowledge this book will probably lack depth and specific information.

ignition systems 7 Mar 2011

Good clear instruction and tips on setting and modifing ignition systems. Both optimising standard settings or altering for tuned engines, both heavily tuned or just running on unleaded. Well worth a read.
