Product Description

Product Description

Distributed Version Control with Git gives a practical introduction into the Git version control system. The focus of this book lies in practising the usage of the Git command line for typical Git tasks.

The first chapter will explain what Git is and also introduce some key concepts of Git. Afterwards a typical Git workflow will be explained and demonstrated so that the reader can follow.

The third chapter explains how to branch using Git and how to handle merge conflicts. You will also learn how to rewrite your commit history via the rebase command.

The fourth chapter explains other important tasks that can be done using Git but are not necessary tasks you would do in a typical workflow, e.g. defining your own Git commands. The next chapter will explain how to access online Git repositories and get pointers how to use Github or Bitbucket as a hosting platform.

The final chapter will give pointers which graphical user interfaces for Git are available.

Don't expect the full git explanation with this book. You would be disappointed ... This is a nice memento with helpful code snippets for real life problems. Worth the price still!

Decent Intro to Git, Worth a Borrow from the Kindle Lending Library 20 Feb 2012
By el tomatillo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This is not much more than an introduction to some of the fundamentals of Git, but if you can borrow it for free from the Kindle Lending Library like I did, it's a worthwhile read. If you ever see yourself delving into more real world use of Git, you'll probably need one of the beefier books out there.

A well written introduction to git 6 Jan 2012
By Hendrik - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
If you want to use Git, you should not be afraid of the command line. This book is based on the online version of Lars Vogels Git tutorial and shows all important steps to create an Git repo, how to commit, push and pull. Afterwards the author explains branching, merging and much more. I really like the tutorial style of the book; you enter the commands directly in the console and see immediately the results.

This book is a practical introduction into Git without explaining every detail of Git. It focuses on the most important use cases.

Useful introduction to Git 18 April 2012
By L. Divringi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are familiar with version control software in general but new to Git, this is the perfect book for you. You get comfortable using Git in less than a couple of hours. For three bucks, it is money well spent. I only have a couple of suggestions to the author:
1. The concept of preparing and applying a patch can be elaborated further. Explain in more detail how to prepare, email, and apply patches for branches that are not the parent branch.
2. The word 'origin' appears in a couple of sample commands without any explanation of what it is. Is it a Git keyword, or is it a branch created and named by you? Please explain.
