George Coulouris   Jean Dollimore   Tim Kindberg

'This book is simply the standard by which all other Distributed Systems texts are measured.'

Amazon.co.uk review of the third edition

From mobile phones to the Internet, our lives depend increasingly on distributed systems linking computers and other devices together in a seamless and transparent way. The fourth edition of this best-selling text continues to provide a comprehensive source of material on the principles and practice of distributed computer systems and the exciting new developments based on them, using a wealth of modern case studies to illustrate their design and development.

Highlights of the fourth edition include:

Ø      Three entirely new chapters on peer-to-peer systems, web services, and mobile and ubiquitous systems.

Ø      More than 25 detailed case studies of well-known systems, eight of them new, including studies of the Grid, Cooltown, Bluetooth andthe (in)security of the WiFi WEP protocol.

Ø      Updated coverage of XML and its security extensions, the Advanced Encryption Standard and security design for ubiquitous systems.

Distributed Systems provides students of computer science and engineering with the skills they will need to design and maintain software for distributed applications. It will also be invaluable to software engineers and systems designers wishing to understand new and future developments in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal book for cramming on the night before the exam!, 26 Aug 2002
The ideas and concepts of distributed systems are explained so clearly and simply that you spend little time trying to understand the concepts - you understand them as soon as you read them.

This book gives quite an in depth explanation of the concepts, which can give too much detail which beyond the course's syllabus - this is where the summary section comes into its own.

If you are a student and this is the main book for your course - take the course! Even if the lectures are boring, the book wont be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Distributed Systems? The Definitive Text., 3 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book is simply the standard by which all other Distributed Systems texts are measured. If you are coming to this book with a basic understanding of Computer Architecture, Operating Systems, Networks and TCP/IP, you will leave this text with a thorough understanding of the essential principles of the discipline. Fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars If distributed systems are for you, so is this book!!, 15 Jan 2001
By A Customer
After using the 2nd edition of this book, I was really pleased at the new material in this revision - there is enough to warrant the purchase of the new 3rd edition as numerous sections of the book have been reworked and brought up to date, notably in Java implementation sections. Overall, and without going in to too much detail about the book - there's too much to go in to really - I can't recommend this book enough for both experienced programmers and newcomers to the concept of distributed and real-time systems.
