This was the first of Anita's books which I read - it made me want to read more! Mainly this was based on her own life and made for compelling reading, particularly with the stark way in which 'distinctions of class' were portrayed. It is a true to life saga and made you feel that you were living this life with her. Sadness, happiness, chances missed and the lessons of life are sharply portrayed here. Read it, it IS a great book. Anita has gone on to write other books which are just as good but in a different genre. Read those too! You will not be disappointed.

LOVE LOVE LOVED IT! 26 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
Picked this up in a lending library at a hotel thinking it was just a silly romance novel, oh how wrong I was; delightfully so. The story pulls you in instantly, and the main character Jane is so wonderful for all her faults and mistakes you can't help but fall in love with her. If you've ever felt you haven't fit in or been insecure you will identify with Jane. Your heart will ache for her in all her troubles and feel a burst of joy at her triumphs. Some bits are so outrageous I actually laghed out loud. It's just an all around good read that I could hardly put down.

Thumping good read 8 Jan 2012

I was immediately drawn in to the story of Jane - a working class girl who becomes a nurse and marries into the nobility. There are some great characters and superb observations of human nature. I laughed and I cried.

It's made all the more fascinating because some of the story is based on the author's real life.

Great story-telling.
