The 22-page story "Distant Thunder" from the comic book Superman Adventures #3 is reprinted in this volume. This is an excellent adventure story for younger readers who are interested in the exploits of Superman and his supporting cast. The style of the artwork is heavily influenced by the animated TV / DVD series of DC Comics' superheroes, and so is likely to be familiar to readers. The story is well-written with a clear storyline, characterisation, and well-described action and problem solving situations. As well as the comic story, there is a supporting page of writer & artist biographies, a general and a Superman-specific glossary, and two pages of Visual Questions and Prompts.
THE SPOILER ZONE
"Be careful what you wish for..." begins at STAR Labs, where Superman and Professor Hamilton are reviewing the history of the planet Krypton through a Kryptonian `memory orb', as the light from the explosion of Krypton is due to reach Earth in the next day or so. Meanwhile, on the streets of Metropolis black cats have been appearing in greater and greater numbers. The next day at the Daily Planet, the newsroom is plunged into darkness as the power is diverted somewhere... and the cats, discovered to be robots created by Brainiac, are forming a giant robot. Brainiac has returned and wants the Kryptonian memory orb...
The `original' Superman comic books are reprinted in both colour and black-and white (and suitable for home colouring-in). They are no less suitable for younger readers than these more modern stories aimed at the same age group as the originals were.
