Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Alex Lloyd's third long player, Distant Light, is a great introduction to one of Australia's best singer-songwriters. Having won awards for his music in his native country, Lloyd, with his new-found fame, hit the road both in his homeland and the US, and apparently this is where these 12 tracks were written.

Being from the great southern continent, being a singer-songwriter and being a guitar player, Neil Finn comparisons are inevitable, though not strictly accurate. The title track, "Distant Light", demonstrates Lloyd's ability as a songwriter magnificently, the hook of the chorus providing the song with that distinctive lift that most songwriters dream about. The FM-friendly rocker "Coming Home" shifts the album up a gear, with its driving rhythm guitar and brass section. The almost plea-like lyrics of the ballad "Save My Soul" at times become a tad trite, but this is where Lloyd's talents come to the forefront and save him from mediocrity. The use of drum loops and other assorted electronic gadgetry provide the song with a vibrant and original sound.

Although lyrically Lloyd is nothing special, the melodies he constructs more than make up for this. "Beautiful" is just another ode to a significant other, but the melody of the song is so striking you'll be humming it for a week. Although a touch AOR, this album contains a fine selection of songs that will get your toes tapping. --Jamie Clark

Album Description

Highly acclaimed Australian singer songwriter Alex Lloyd returns with his third album of beautifully crafted songs, ‘Distant Light’, in August, preceeded by the single ‘Hello The End’.

The lead track from the album, it effortlessly showcases what makes Alex Lloyd such a revered and respected artist. Combining an innate sense of melody, a driving chorus, inventive guitars and a delicious melancholy alongside the kind of pop hooks that swirl around your memory, ‘Hello The End’ is another gem from the pen of Australia’s best-kept secret.

A bonafide star in his native land, with multi-platinum albums and a stack of awards to his name, he’s also been garlanded with praise by UK critics over the past few years and compared to the likes of Coldplay, Crowded House, Radiohead, The Verve, Elliot Smith and Turin Brakes.

Both ‘Hello The End’ and the ‘Distant Light’ album are perfect examples of an artist at the peak of his powers – emotionally direct yet shrouded in a wistful mystery that intrigues, excites and comforts in equal measure.

A great third album 2 Nov 2003
Format:Audio CD
Well what can I say about Alex Lloyd's third album 'distant light'. He has updated his sound to appeal to those interested in bands such as Coldplay. He is an Australian artist that definitely would appeal to a UK audience. By far my favourite track is that titled 'Coming Home'. It is a catchy song that you just can't help but sing along to. I just can't get bored of this album as every track has something that is appealing. Cd 2 is a great added extra which enables you to watch some of his music videos. Overall a great package that is highly recommended.

Real talent 11 July 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I have to admit I am new to Alex Lloyd - I 'risk' bought this album when I was in Australia knowing nothing about what I would be getting and I have fallen totally in love with it. The only album for many years that I have played back to back repeatedly, it became the distraction from insomnia on many a bus/train/plane journey across Australia.

Alex Lloyd's voice and songwriting talent make this a beautiful album that will have you singing along in no time. There are so many great tracks on this album - the restrained 'Save My Soul' to the melodic 'Coming Home' and 'Beautiful'.

I have no regrets on 'splashing out' on this album, my only regret is not having discovered Alex Lloyd sooner - its a shame such talent gets overlooked. If you like true songwriters, music by artists such Neil Finn, Pete Yorn, Jack Johnson, Val Emmich to name but a few - give this album a try.

This album is probably Alex Lloyd's weakest to date, but that just means it's merely very good instead of reaching modern classic status like his previous 2 efforts. For a while, and with the opening 3 songs especially he almost manages it, but a few fillers such as Far Away and the plodding America drag it down. Still a nigh on essential purchase for any Lloyd fans but newcomers should check out albums 1 and 2 first.
