3.0 out of 5 stars Hawkwind - 'Distant Horizons' (EBS), 31 Oct 2007
This review is from: Distant Horizons (Audio CD)
Decent late '90's effort by the band, which at the time included Brock, Ron Tree, drummer Richard Chadwick and (new at the time) guitarist Jerry Richards. Believe me, Richards fits in rather well with Hawkwind. 'Distant Horizons' is their follow-up to 'Alien 4'. More in the direction of hard rock perhaps than 'space rock' but 'Distant...' does have it's moments. Like the gem "Phetamine Street", the semi-heavy "Alchemy", "Reptoid Vision", "Wheels" {sounds good, live} and the techno-like "Taxi For Max". Good, just not great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired, unfinished and about half decent, 17 Nov 2011

I suppose this is Hawkwind's unfinished symphony. It does feel at times that it has been released before it was finished which is exactly what happened. Love in Space sounds like a completely inconsequential filler compared to the studio version with vocals, available now on the live Love in Space album, though this would have been a better location as a bonus. It's not a great selection of tracks either. There are punky trashes like Phetamine Street and Reptoid Vison which don't work very well and heavy rock trashes like Alchemy which sounds like filler material. So what does work? The title track is quite good and wouldn't be out of place on other Hawkwind albums from this decade with it's techno rock feel. Clouded Vision is a Brock classic and by far the best thing here but it does feel like a bit more work is required. Population Overload, Wheels and Kauai are decent enough. Taxi for Max is pointless and Waimea Canyon Drive plods along in a much longer pointless manner. For bonus tracks we get another trash with Archaic, Kauai with a different first half and a very messy Morpheus. Nothing to get excited about.

My guess is that finishing it wouldn't have helped a lot but there's five worthwhile tracks. One of the weakest Hawkwind studio albums and I'll be generous with three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hawkwind still lead the way., 23 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Horizons (Audio CD)
This album has Hawkwind firing on all cylinders. A powerfull album with a refreshing style and up-tempo beat. There are, as usual, soft melodies throughout, especially with 'Love in Space', which is presented here in it's non vocal form.(a version with lyrics was subsequently released.)
There are distinct style changes in this album with a leaning towards 'fringe' dance scene in places. Overall though, this is still a 'spacerock' album in the best traditions of Hawkwind. This is Hawkwind in their latest encarnation and every bit as vibrant as they were 30 something years ago. Buy it and make your day!
