4.0 out of 5 stars I Fink , therefore i am. 1 Nov 2007
By russell clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Surely , by now there are enough plaintive singer songwriters around to fulfil everyone on the planets appetite for dextrous string strumming and moody introspective vocals ? Well there is an overload of this type of performer and lets be brutally frank most of them are so wet they would embarrass a haddock. Former disc spinner and sampler Fink though is a different kettle of fish (pun very much intended there) .He has an engaging smoky fibrous voice, and the music is invested with quavering soul , thrumming tension and as the sleeve notes eloquently state "Jagged -edged sophistication". Aided by the muscular production from Andy Barlow( From the group Lamb)the songs are acoustic based but layers of electronic atmospherics -"Get Your Share", crisp percussion -"Blueberry Pancakes"- or incremental use of dub space and diffuse instrumentation -"Make it Good" lend the album more variety and allows the subtle melodies to percolate into the listeners heads more elegantly . There are the more traditional acoustic songs , like a more intimate and bruised John Martyn - "Under The Same Stars" , "If Only" , "So Many Roads" and the albums high point the stunning closing track "Little Blue Mailbox".
Opening track "Troubles What You're In" has more complex fretwork, like a Spanish folk song and quietly seething backing strings . It's these subtle details and tasty fundamentals that make this such an enjoyable album. Despite its lack of any true killer hooks or grab you by the ears and throw you round the room sonic interludes the whole album deviously charms you till before you know it every track on the album has something that you come to love. A quietly stunning album and one whose insidious charms approximate a kind of sly brilliance.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Thing!!! 10 Oct 2007

A fantastic follow up to Biscuits, Distance and Time is a further exploration and evolution of Fink's sound. An album drenched in harmonies that'll melt butter, and heart wrenching melodies and vocals that come together to produce an album that exceeds all expectations. I've been following Fink closely since first hearing "Fresh Produce", and his third album could possibly well be the one that launches him into the public eyes and ears. A marvellous album that deserves heaps of praise not just to Fin and his band but also to Ninja for persevering with an artist who's sound differs so much from their usual rota.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why do we not hear more Fink? 2 April 2008
Format:Audio CD
I bought this on the strength of the latest Ninjatunes Comp, You Don't Know. One of the stand out tunes being by Fink. So off I duly trotted my fingers to amazon to find out more. Why is this artist not featured on Jools or similar? Some reviewers might put you off, by comparing Fink to other singer songwriters. However this undersells the innovation of this artist and the songs on this album.

Long live Fink, this album is an excellent buy.

I bought this album on the strength of "This is the thing" albeit can't seem to get enough of "Trouble's what you're in". Being a songwriter myself i can relate to every word. Perfection!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Trouble's what you're in 7 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
The boys done good. Such a great start to the album with trouble and this is the thing and is followed by a collection of rather different tunes. Easing back into those blues chords and slow easy vocals that we love from the first album, a pleasure to listen to on those sunday morning hang overs. Its quite different to biscuits, not so much a bad thing, but I love the innocence and honesty of its lyrics and even its sound. Despite that, this is a fantastic album and I havent had it out of my cd player for a good few weeks and its a great listen, BUT not as good as biscuits, I thought that was just because it was his first album and I played it into the ground, but I honestly think its a more sincere and honest record. Don't let that put you off though, this is a beauty!

4.0 out of 5 stars Here's the thing.. 12 April 2014
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
"This is the Thing" was the first Fink song I ever heard and I loved it. However, I soon found out that he has a lot of much better songs. Similarly, this album isn't one of my favourites by him as I've come to enjoy all the ones better. Which is not to say tht this album is bad, far from it! Stand out tracks for me include "If Only", "Under the Same Stars", "Make it Good"
