Finally, a book that addresses your concerns about DID. From Eve to Sybil to Truddi Chase, the media have long chronicled the lives of people with dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly known as multiple personality disorder. "The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook" serves as a much-needed bridge for communication between the dissociative individual and therapists, family, and friends who also have to learn to deal with the effects of this truly astonishing disorder.

Being diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, I took to researching more about it. I purchased this book as well as a few others on amazon, and this, personally, was by far the best read.

It addressed those with the condition and all those involved (such as parents, doctors etc.) and used their own knowledge of dealing with DID patients to create a detailed overview of Dissociative Identity Disorder. There are personal views from DID sufferers as well as case studies that offer a fantastic insight into how others cope and deal with having the disorder.

This book helped me learn more about my condition as well as showing me the differences between other disorders such as schizophrenia, DDNOS and Bipolar using clear and understandable tables (all which have sources and studied evidence).

Unlike other books I have purchased on the condition, this book really connects with those suffering with DID and makes them seem more human as appose to a behind-the-glass subject. It applauds the well-designed coping mechanism of DID as a whole, whilst taking into account a person's daily struggles with the condition. It maintains a well-balanced pro-con feel of DID throughout the text, with viewpoints from therapists, to media, to society.

I am going to university to study clinical psychology shortly and so this book helped with research and gave me more of an insight to dissociation as a whole. It also picked up on some more of the conditions following the DSM-IV spectrum (such as post-traumatic stress, depression, depersonalisation etc.).

The only problem with this book as previously mentioned in other reviews, is the fact that "finding a therapist" is all american based and really is a complete waste of a chapter if you aren't from the states (however, the book is thick enough to make up for this). Also I feel that there could also have been a little more detail into "alter" states and how they function, but I feel this isnt enough to knock a star off considering all its 5 star benefits.

I am writing this review for the benefit of people who are interested in this book for professional/educational purposes, or for personal interest, rather than the prurient reader looking for a good read about a sensational phenomenon.

To such an audience, I would say as an overview, the book is good. It is broad in scope, ranging from diagnostic indicators, treatment approaches, what to expect in therapy, the functions of dissociation, and self-help/coping strategies.

On the downside, its literal engagement with notions such as "alters" strikes me as slightly dubious. A lot of what is in this book is not what you would describe as "evidence-based" either. It's an interesting enough and informative read, but it lacks theoretical and empirical rigour. Part of the reason for this might be that the book seeks to be all things to all people - it is aimed simultaneously at "clients, therapists, family and friends", so that might give you an idea of the kind of level we are talking about. Also, because it is quite broad in scope, it is somewhat limited in terms of depth of coverage.

The "Choosing a Therapist" section is clearly aimed for people in the US of A, so perhaps not that useful if you're in the UK. Some of the discussions of therapy are rather "American" in content as well, so might not fit so well into a British therapy culture.

Hope this is helpful.

Helpful book to share with patients/clients who experience dissociation and Dissociative Identity Disorder - helps client to understand origins and manifestations and build coping strategies. Good book for therapists to share with clients.
