A rapturous appreciation of pork crackling, a touching description of hungry London chimney sweeps, a discussion of the strange pleasure of eating pineapple and a meditation on the delights of Christmas feasting are just some of the subjects of these personal, playful writings from early nineteenth-century essayist Charles Lamb.
Exploring the joys of food and also our complicated social relationship with it, these essays are by turns sensuous, mischievous, lyrical and self-mocking. Filled with a sense of hunger, they are some of the most fascinating and nuanced works ever written about eating, drinking and appetite.

everlasting pleasure in roast pig,

This review is from: A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig & Other Essays (Penguin Great Food) (Paperback)
This was a present for a friend now in her eighties, but I can tell you how much it delighted her. A lady of that age is likely to have had a very sound education in English Literature, and would have read these essays at school. My friend could only remember sections of them, so she very much enjoyed revisiting them, being reminded of the school classroom (English being her favourite subject), and feeling a little bit superior to present-day 14-year-olds, who, she thinks, have very little idea of how good sentences are constructed. Added to that, this is a very pleasing edition.

Fascinating Cuisine,
By Lynnie from Philly "Lynnie from Philly" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig and Other Essays (Penguin Great Food) (Paperback)
This was intended for a Christmas gift. The recipient wasn't too thrilled. The entire series published by Penguin Books is really quite clever. They took works by famous individuals, some from the culinary world and reproduced them. I thought it was interesting to read about life in other times. Kudos to Penguin for doing this, anyway!
