From the Publisher

Orange, Green and Tradu Union banners in Northern Ireland
The popular political and commemorative culture of Northern Ireland is intensely visual with the summer months featuring parades resplendent with colour. This is the first book to focus on one of the oldest parading practices, the carrying of banners. It charts the history of the Orange tradition, including the Black Preceptory and the Apprentice Boys of Derry, and the nationalist experience of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Irish National Foresters as well as more recent Republican developments. There is also a section on the tradition within the Trade Union movement.

The many photographs focus on contemporary banners and show the surprisingly wide variety of subjects and styles to be found on the banners carried by the main marching orders and organisations. Banners are tricky to photograph, difficult to preserve and awkward to display and this book is a unique record and a rare opportunity to see many in one place.

Neil Jarman is an anthropologist who has researched widely on banners, parades, emblems, regalia and murals. His doctoral research at University College London.
