Product Description

Product Description

‘Dispatches from a Dilettante’ is a rampage through a chaotic career, encompassing rock music, religion, royalty and renegade kids - stretching from the Caribbean to Cambodia.
It’s a memoir on the absurdity of endeavour and a restless lifestyle spent working exceptionally hard trying to avoid it.
There are close encounters with Jimi Hendrix, the Prince of Wales, ex footballers and the current Head of the Catholic Church in England, together with bar room brawls and board room bitterness.
Whether it’s the drugs and desperation of life on a Welsh housing estate or discussions in the Gardens of Highgrove it’s a life lived whimsically, from the higher echelons of business to the gutters of Phonm Penh.
It’s about a music-loving meanderer who has never quite got over being at Woodstock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious...a cracking read! 1 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first time in an age I've not minded being stuck on a train for a few hours.

Whether you know the author or not you'll be compelled to keep turning the pages, not just to keep laughing, but to keep learning more about a life full of mischief (the right kind), fun and excitement (the sometimes right kind), ambition and drive (not the misguided type you see in those poor delusional sycophants crawling up the backside of Mr Sugar each week), honesty (no Royal pardons here!) and greatness (working hard to change the life's of others so that they might get the chance to live a little themselves).

A really satisfying book.

5.0 out of 5 stars thirst for the new 24 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Memoir and life writing are very fashionable just now but this one is out of the ordinary, the story of a baby boomer who shared his generation's curiosity and thirst for the new and (unlike many) actually acted on it.
Rowson is endlessly restless and endlessly interesting, whether it's about Prince Charles, working on a Welsh sink estate, or a teenage visit to the United States. He has done many things in his life and makes even the disasters entertaining.
The humour and warmth of the writing make this book easy to read - and irresistible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A life less ordinary 5 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A joy! This is a rip-roaring book, jam-packed with a tales from a life less ordinary. The sheer range that 'Dispatches' covers - from royalty to roofing, across four continents - means that it's full of surprises. It's hugely readable and blends easy humour with self-deprecation and humility. Thankfully, the author makes no attempt to force this spiralling collection of anecdoes into a single, unifying theme or message. Nevertheless, it's hard to read this book without thinking that life is immeasurable richer for variety, experimentation and exploration.
