My four year-old son and I appreciate the many levels in this book: literary inspiration, artistic inspration, the movie story, and behind the scenes are the chapter headings. This book is a great insight into the creation of a Disney film; as well as a platform for discussing the Disney-fication of a historical story (the validity of different interpretations, etc.). The book offers the views of many people involved in the project. Pam Coats, the producer, discusses maintaining sensitivity to Mu Lan's position as a girl in that historical context; while Chen-Yi Chang, a character designer from Taiwan, focused on the authenticity of the Chinese architecture, history, costuming, and traditions. The book is also beautifully produced -- I imagine my son reading it to his children, as I read him treasured books from my childhood.

Another good book on a Disney classic. Full of wonderfull drawings, sketches and animation concepts and background designs. I always buy the "Art of" books Disney puts out on each of their new films. It's always a treat to see how concepts of characters and backgrounds changed as they went along. Sometimes for the better, and sometimes not. Being an artist myself, I always enjoy seeing the drawings of the rough animation and characters studies. It's nice that they included some photos of the original source material from China in the front of the book. This again shows how far Disney's team goes to research a subject. The information and research shows up on the screen. And besides, the books pretty cheap, so you can't go wrong. My only complaint is that it could have been a slightly bigger book page wise.

Wonderful 19 May 2014

This is a wonderful book, which features not only the Disney version of the story, but also the original poem that inspired it and information on the making of the film, with beautiful art and interesting facts, it would go very well with "The Art of Mulan". It's also a good book for introducing younger children to the art of animation (other than actually showing them animation). As an animation student, animation has always been my passion and I'm pretty sure if I had had the chance to look at books like this as a child, it would only have made me even more enthusiastic about it, so I highly recommend it.

I ordered a used copy and, as described, it did have some tears and creases but nothing too serious and it's definitely great value for less than $2.
