Even the truly hard-hearted would find it difficult not to be uplifted by this reissue of a charming 1960s album where jazz legend Louis Armstrong covers some of the best-loved Disney songs, including 'When You Wish Upon A Star', 'Zip A Dee Doo Dah' and 'The Bare Necessities'. The songs themselves are great to begin with, but Armstrong's interpretations, although hardly radical, make you enjoy them in a whole new way. Put simply, a joy to listen to, and a terrific feelgood album for the young, or simply the young at heart.

Originally released in 1968, "Disney Songs the Satchmo Way" brings together several Disney songs covered by none other than Louis Armstrong. Aside from two songs from a '60s live-action musical called "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band", all the songs on the album are from well-known favourites like "Snow White", "The Jungle Book" and "Mary Poppins". Armstrong's renditions may not be particularly different, but they are completely rousing and charming. Particular stand-outs include an aptly jazzy "Bare Necessities", a rollicking "Bibbidi Bibbidi Boo" and a haunting take on "When You Wish Upon a Star". A must from jazz and Disney fans.

I bought this a while ago, before there were previews to listen to. It's not a bad album, it's just not quite as good as I thought it would be. It's very much an easy listening kind of album not really jazz but then Louis was doing more of that kind of thing at this point in his career. At less than 32 minutes it's not the longest album and there's not a great variation in tempo, and the backing chorus don't help. The best tracks are Bare Necessities (why aren't there more tracks from The Jungle Book, this is just the thing for Louis) and Wish Upon a Star.
