Being a twenty year old I enjoy my video games to usually contain adult themes. However, every once in a while I can't help but play games related to Disney films. They provide good escapism and I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoy playing some of them. Disney's Bolt did not disappoint. I'd like to point out that this is a kid's game and I had this in mind while doing this review, I play these games for fun, not for creativity/top-notch graphics/groundbreaking gameplay.
The story is very straight forward that obviously suits this type of game. Penny's father has been kidnapped by the evil Dr. Calico. Penny and Bolt have to travel through five different countries, finding out where her father is being held, who would want a complex story for a kid's game? I have to admit when I purchased the game, I was expecting it to follow the movie's events. What it actually provides is an adventure that is done through Bolt and Penny's fake TV show, which actually makes more sense and I'm certain that was definitely the better idea.
The gameplay is straight forward and fun, you play as both Penny and Bolt. While playing as Penny you must use more stealthy approaches to the enemies by using her wheelbar. The wheelbar is used to knock out enemies, going invisible and climbing buildings/objects, and is all very easy to use. When playing as Bolt, you have super powers. These include Superbark, Ground Stomp and Laser eyes and are also easy to use. While playing through the game there are collectables, which are usually easy to find, and will upgrade Bolt's powers and Penny's gadgets. The graphics are what you would expect from a Disney tie in game, simple and colourful.
There were a few annoyances, such as the camera was dodgy at times. There were also parts that even being a twenty year old, I couldn't figure out what to do! Apart from that, no complaints.
The achievements in the game are very straight forward as you would expect, I don't play for achievements and wasn't following any guides and managed to get around 900 in one playthrough. I decided I may as well go back and get the rest so I did. There are collecting achievements but there are guides that will help, overall to get 1000 it will take about 6-7 hours of gameplay.
I recommend this game to adults buying it for kids and for adults who enjoy being a kid for a few hours.
