Product Description

Identical twins vie for a family empire built on deceit, cruelty, and dark secrets--and one woman stands between them while another waits in the shadows.

DISINTEGRATION
(Revised March 2011. Includes alternate ending. DRM-free)

When a mysterious fire destroys his home and shatters his family, Jacob Wells is pulled into a downward spiral that draws him ever closer to the past he thought was dead and buried.

Now his twin brother Joshua is back in town, seeking to settle old scores and claim his half of the Wells birthright. Jacob’s wife Renee is struggling with her own past and her attempts to salvage Jacob are driven by guilt and ambition.

As Jacob and Joshua return to the twisted roles they adopted at the hands of cruel, demanding parents, they wage a war of pride, wealth, and passion. They share a poisonous obsession with the provocative, manipulative Carlita, whose immigrant family helped build the Wells fortune.

Joshua wants other things, too, but Jacob’s desires are divided between the forbidden love he can’t possess, the respectability he can never have, and the revenge he is dying to taste. And Renee has dark motives of her own.

If only Jacob can figure out which of them to blame. But the lines of identity are blurred, because Joshua and Jacob share much more than blood.

And the childhood games have become deadly serious.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark and twisted tale 29 Mar 2011
By Darkiss
Format:Kindle Edition
When I read this book I thought throughout that I knew where it was heading. I believed I had guessed what the hidden secrets were. Much to my surprise I was totally wrong. The author went a completely different way and each twist came upon me totally unexpectedly. The story wove its way into intricate patterns and I found my mind running down many dead ends.

There are no supernatural elements within this novel. The horror instead comes from the characters action and the author explores the idea of the true evil that can live in the souls of mortal men. It is a very dark twisted tales that at times had me questioning my own sanity. The horror doesn't come in the form of blood and gore but comes in the form of actions and thoughts. It is the thoughts and the unravelling of sanity that I found most disturbing. The book slowly reveals not only the horrors of the present day but also horror of the past. All of which is reveal slowly, layer by layer. We get a glimpse of the shocking that can lie just beneath the surface of a seemingly normal little town and how that horror can spread through generations.

This is as dark and twisted as a story can get. The author portrays the strains on the mental stability of each character very well and you get a real sense of place with the setting. But this book will not be for everyone. The darkness starts on the first page of this book and there is no let up throughout the whole story. In fact it gets darker and darker as you progress. This can make the story feel very claustrophobic and I needed to take a break from reading it every once and a while just to assure myself that the world still have light and sanity in it.

I enjoyed this book and was truly surprised by the twists and turn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping tale of disaffected Twins 1 Mar 2012
By DJP
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jacob Wells has dark secrets that involve his twisted twin, Joshua. When tragedy claims his second child, Jacob and his wife, Renee, must put aside their problems and try to work together to save their business, their sanity and their lives. Was the fire an accident? Where is the door that swings both ways - and what past trauma does it unlock in Jacob's fragile mind?

For Joshua - it has always been about getting a fair share, and he will stop at nothing to prove to Jacob that they are both the same and deserve an equal share of the money and the pain left by their father. Joshua's lover Carlita comes between them as she always has, a hot knife to Jacob's rational thoughts - and the nightmare unfolds.

Dark and terrifying - more for its portrayal of Jacob's psychological meltdown than for violence or horror - Disintegration is a chilling take on power, passion and the corruption of money. In the town built by their Father, the Wells Twins battle for the ultimate prize.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rule breaking twins and writing! 5 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
There are many rules for creative writing, most of which are there to be broken at the right time by the right, good writer. Fortunately, Nicholson is a very good writer, because he tackles a couple of biggies here. Firstly, the advice is always to make your protagonists sympathetic - and no one is going to have much sympathy for the three main characters in Disintegration. Second, try to avoid unreliable narrators - and it's clear from the very beginning that at least one or more of the minds we see into are hiding something, perhaps a lot, from us - so what and who to believe?

Nicholson takes both these rules and shreds them to good effect - he gets away with it because the writing sizzles and crackles off the page. The opening chapter is a cracker and while it never quite reaches those levels again, you are pulled onwards, downwards, into the dark descent to hell of Jacob and Joshua by the strength of the story-telling.

I've kept back a star though because however good you are, those rules are there for a reason, and sometimes the unleavened darkness and uncertainty is hard going. Combine that with a plot straight out of story-central - evil twins - and I can't quite bring myself to go to the whole five - but read it anyway!
