Product Description

Product Description

Brought up in a stiflingly traditional Muslim household in England, where the rules are enforced by violent punishments, Saira is watched 24 hours a day.

Cut off from modern life, chaperoned to and from school, she is forbidden to have western friends. When an innocent friendship with a boy flourishes, one of Saira's brothers finds out and she is put on the first plane to Lahore, punished for dishonouring the family.

There the nightmare really begins - Saira is forced to marry a stranger who makes it clear that all he wants from her is sex and a visa. After a hair-raising escape back to England, she eventually returns to the family home, but as a virtual slave.

Refusing to be beaten, she escapes once more, but with her parents in financial trouble and with one of her brothers running up huge drug debts, Saira is forced to earn money the only way she can: by selling her body.

Wracked with shame and guilt at having fallen into prostitution, Saira hits rock bottom, marries again and has a daughter who is the light of her life. Her husband, however, reveals himself to be a brutally violent bully. After one beating too many, Saira flees with her baby daughter and sets about the harrowing ordeal of re-building their shattered lives.

DISGRACED
is the heart-breaking true tale of a girl who had the courage to break free. It is a story of escape, adventure and survival told by a woman who has finally discovered her true voice.

About the Author

Saira is a successful, independent business woman, bringing up her daughter alone. Her family still know nothing of what she has been through and names have been changed to protect Saira and her daughter from their anger. Should they find out how she has dishonoured them they might very well decide to kill her.

This is an easy book to read once you start you can't put it down! It gives a good insight into how female Muslims can be treated. It is a must read if you work with children and families as it gives you a better understanding into Muslim family life.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good insight?, 11 May 2009
i did enjoy this book but it took me a while to get into it, mainly because i think it was so far fetched, but maybe this is because i couldnt relate to any events within the book. I just cant comprehend how anyone could put up with that much punishment from their family and still want to be a part of it.

A lot of the book centres around ridiculous amounts of debts in which a knight in shining armour evenually pays off it sounds like something out of a jackie collins novel! I am not saying its untrue i just cant understand how a situation that bad could land on an innocent persons shoulders.

A good read and the beginning is a very good insight into another culture things that i wasnt aware of before.
