For better or for worse, I came to this without having played the computer game or read the manga.
This DVD gives you the first four episodes of Disgaea, an anime series which chronicles the adventures of Laharl, Prince of the Netherworld, in his quest to claim the throne for himself in the wake of his father's death. The series is fun - it has a sense of humour and it never takes itself very seriously. It also affectionately references and/or parodies other pop culture staples, so there's always enough going on to keep you entertained and amused. The one exception to this rule is episode three, which tries to be bizarre, trippy and funny, but which succeeds in being just lame, lame and lame. I very nearly wrote the series off after this, but I'm glad that I didn't, because with episode four it bounces back with as much fun, vigour and inventiveness as the first two episodes.
The "EXTRAS" include the option to watch Disgaea in the original Japanese (with English subtitles) therebye avoiding the American dub. The point of this being that American anime dubs all too frequently censor the original material, and twist its meaning to suit American cultural imperatives. Also among the extras are textless opening and closing sequences, English and Japanese trailers, and a somewhat pointless interview with a person whom, we are told, was one of the "voice actors".
Overall, I very much enjoyed these first four episodes of the series, but neverthless they lose a star for episode three.
