5.0 out of 5 stars Disease and History: Of Napolean, Typhus, and So Much More, 19 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This book is well written and easy to understand. It deals with with many different eras of history, including ancient times, the Middle Ages, Napolean, and others ending with a chapter on modern times and the future of diseases' impact on man's exploits. The authors do a great job of summarizing stories that could easily fill an entire book on their own, while showing the impact of certain diseases. History and Disease familiarized me with some famous events in history (Napolean's march into Russia for example) and showed a different perspective as well by adding information about what diseases were running rampant at the time. A good book that is loaded with great information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but slightly superficial, 19 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Disease has always been man's fathful stalker - the psychotic kind that tends to carry a two-foot knife - a fact ably and enthrallingly restated by Disease and History. I found the descriptions of each individual malady quite fascinating, as well as unusually easy to follow. Each - syphilis, cholera, typhus and so on - is well integrated into its hisorical context and each aspect engagingly explained. The only problem with the book is that some of its attempts to emphasise the impact of disease upon events seem - not necessarily accurately perhaps - a touch far-fetched; the outcome of the Peloponnesian War is a notable and debatable example. In general, however, one to take on holiday and quote extensively to the cleaners in your hotel.
