Product Description

Who taught witchcraft to Granny Weatherwax? What does Death keep on his desk? This is an A-Z guide to the characters, places, flora and fauna of Terry Pratchett's fantasy planet, Discworld, with sketches and maps of the key locations.

About the Author

Stephen Briggs lives in Oxford. As well as compiling THE DISCWORLD COMPANION and THE NEW DISCWORLD COMPANION, he has also co-authored the Discworld DIARIES, the MAPPS and has dramatised most of the Discworld novels. Terry Pratchett is a publishing phenomenon. He has sold more than 65 million copies of his books worldwide, and among his many prizes and citations are the World Fantasy Award, the Carnegie Medal, the BSFA Award, eight honorary doctorates and, of course, a knighthood. Sir Terry Pratchett is best known for his Discworld series, set on a flat planet, supported on the backs of four elephants, who in turn stand on the back of the great turtle A'Tuin as it swims majestically through space. Four of these novels - Hogfather, Going Postal, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic - have been adapted for television, with more to follow. He lives near Salisbury in Wiltshire.

This book is a great guide to all places, characters, and terms used in Discworld novels. Wanna know everything about the Shades?Forgot which novels feature Mr Silverfish or Rincewind? What are the gods of Disc? How many levels of wizardry are there actally? What are motos of all guilds? If you've ever asked yourself some of these questions, this is the perfect book for you.

There are alot of things in the Discworld novels that can seem a little "over one's head", thus it's great knowing there is a reference book regarding nearly everything the Discworld has to offer. And if by chance you haven't read any of the novels so far, it can act as a good introduction of what to expect from them. Incidentally, it's highly recommended you read the novels; there will be the chance that you hear the ending of each character and story before you read the books themselves. So the book enhances the reading more, thus I recommend you read it along with your Discworld novels to enrich the reading ^^

Terry Pratchett's worlds don't seem to need an encyclopedia and this is the encyclopedia they don't need. The interesting parts of this book for me were the sections other than the lexicographical listing of things from the books.
