Less than one third of the surface of our planet is above water. This is one of the many fascinating facts which emerge from the Discovery Channel Ocean Planet CD-ROM--an entertaining and informative guided tour of the earth's oceans.
Ocean Planet takes you into an interactive theatre to watch video clips which explain the complex links between the weather and the sea. With the use of impressive computer animation models, you can watch the underwater equivalent of hurricanes in action; learn why the oceans are in danger and discover what you can do to preserve them.
Clips of whales and penguins in the freezing wilderness of the polar regions are breathtaking and the quality of the photography is superb. For additional information, you can easily call up articles (for example, learn about the tribal peoples who are dependent on the oceans). You are also shown examples of how satellites can now track the changing temperatures of the sea and there is footage of how scientists have travelled into space to understand the issues that challenge aquatic life's delicate balance.
It does take a while to install this title, and you may have to adjust my display to add more colours. But it is lively, simple to follow and stimulating to watch. By far the best feature is the "ask the experts" section--click on the questions and watch and hear clips of experts talking directly to you about key environmental challenges facing the oceans.
This title also comes with the video Loch Ness Discovered, which takes you deep below the murky depths in search of the legendary monster. --Justin Hunt
