This is a really tough review to write. First, I have to qualify that I am a dino nut.I have watched the Jurrassic Park trilogy far too many times, as I have Walking With Dinosaurs.... so when I spotted this, I thought, bingo... 6 dvds of Dino fun...

Best way to analyse this little lot is as follows: if you want a proper scientific trip through each of the 6 DVD's, you're in the right place. There are lots of interviews with scientists, trips back in time and footage of great dino digs in places as varied as Argentina and the Isle Of Wight. From this you will learn a lot about the various fossils unearthed around the globe which have given us a major advance in our understanding of the subject matter....

BUT, and here is the big catch, if you are looking for top dino animations a la Jurassic Park, Walking With Dinosaurs etc, you will be sorely dissappointed. This series was made between 1998 and 2000, from the print on the boxes, Jurassic Park came out in 1993, so you would imagine that there would be some great graphics here, but the dinos themselves could have come from one of those plasticine animations from the 1950's.

It's bizarre, this series is fronted by The Discovery Channel so you would (as I did) imagine that they would go all out on creating something that rivals the BBC's finest, but it does not come anywhere close.

I still will give it three stars for the actual narratives which are educational and very interesting, but truly, this whole series needs re-making with new animations. Get that in and this will probably be the best dino series you will see, in terms of educational and entertainment values.

This is a collection of 6 DVDs examining the discovery and our understanding of dinosaurs – palaeontology – through interviews with current dinosaur hunters – palaeontologists – and reconstructions or original film of them at work, with occasional archive footage of early explorers. You get to see the palaeontologists in their natural habitats, searching for and digging up bones, as well as many scenes set in museums, workshops and laboratories, with some major discoveries being shown or reconstructed – and reconstruction is what palaeontology is all about! Mixed in with this is CGI footage of the dinosaurs in their habitats, going about their business, which is mainly stamping about or hunting each other. The CGI is not of the standard of the BBC’s Walking With Dinosaurs, but this is not that sort of programme – this one focuses on the modern-day discovery of the evidence for the dinosaurs, with illustrations / scenes of how those dinosaurs might have looked or behaved, and with ‘fact sheet’ diagrams of the dinosaurs mixed in showing their dates and comparative sizes with people. The series was made in the 1990s, so can be slightly out of date in certain areas, such as the colouring of dinosaurs – more recent BBC documentaries have discussed whether dinosaurs were in fact brightly coloured animals, much like birds, and while these documentaries discus the relationship between birds and dinosaurs, modern opinions – as expressed by the BBC – have moved on much further from the early ideas shown here. However, these are still interesting programmes, and as narrated by Jeff Goldblum from Jurassic Park, are well-presented, and do not suffer from the repetition and constant breaks in narrative of many American programmes; and at 52 minutes running time each, they manage to pack in a lot of content.Read more ›

Product was exactly as described and once again under the Amazon banner was cost effective, did everything it claimed and was delivered in advance of expectations.

Once this has worn out or been used I will return to this buyer for a replacement.

Thank you

The narration is a bit poo, the animation is okay but story lines could be much better. Ok for young audience but not for adults. Still can't beat walking with dinosaurs and still nothing can touch Jurassic park and that was released in 1993!!

Great information if you are an adult but the series is quite dated in comparison to say, Walking With Dinosaurs, Planet Dinosaur etc and as such does not contain any info on Spinosaurus. Graphics are not brilliant and it was a bit too info fact for my son. Shame as with so many DVD's you would expect something more.

My dinosaur-loving grandson, aged five, loved these CDs. They were informative without being too way over his head, according to my daughter.
