Review

"Things change quickly in the city that never sleeps. A restaurant that was there a week ago might have vanished in the span of a New York minute. Mitch Broder is a journalist who is well aware of the transience of 'vintage' New York. Even the places that you assume will be around forever can one day disappear."But this fun little book celebrates what is still around. Broder visits the classic New York restaurants, shops and nightclubs ... places that form the heart of the city. All of the spots profiled here have plenty of character ... [and] Broder goes into depth. He tells the story of each establishment and offers portraits of the personalities involved."-June Sawyers, Chicago Tribune "A nostalgia-lover's guide, Discovering Vintage New York not only recalls some of the city's favorite restaurants and other hangouts but also reveals the people behind them."-Sam Roberts, New York Times "Mitch Broder respects his elders: venerable chop houses, hot dog stands with aged neon signs, timeworn diners, classic bookstores."-Chris Erikson, New York Post "A Big Apple time machine."-Scott Rosenberg, amNewYork "In an age when Times Square feels like Disney World and Manhattan is overrun by chain stores and franchise coffee houses, Broder takes readers to locales where the quirky charm of old New York still thrives."-Richard Liebson, Gannett Newspapers "If you long for a time forgotten and a guide to the bygone metropolis, read Discovering Vintage York. Your next visit to the Big Apple could be an unforgettable one."-Cristine Struble, Examiner.com "If you're ever here, this is your guide."-Julie Banderas, Fox News "Discovering Vintage New York is a must-have guide to what remains-before it vanishes."-Jeremiah Moss, Jeremiah's Vanishing New York "Mitch does a marvelous job as both a storyteller and historian. His descriptions are often hilarious, always delightful, and razor-sharp."-Joe Franklin, broadcasting legend, Bloomberg Radio "It's the 'weird stores' of New York that keep its heart in place, and Mitch has written a wonderful book about those weird stores, and how they keep the heart and soul of New York intact."-Adam Gopnik, author of Paris to the Moon "Mitch Broder's voice is impeccable, a master of economy. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves New York and a tale well-told."-Peter D. Kramer, LoHud.com "Be sure to check out Mitch Broder's Discovering Vintage New York."-Lara Elmayan, UntappedCities.com "Pick up the book and get to as many of these New York gems as you can."-Mary Shustack, Wag Magazine "I actually learned stuff that I didn't know ... about the history of the store before I got here. I got an education out of it."-Carol Walsh, owner of Native Leather, Greenwich Village

I bought this book after seeing it discussed on the FOX news channel. It is a good read
and provides some very interesting facts about places you may otherwise not have noticed or even those places you may already be aware of.
While we found the information provided to be very good, we felt that
many of the photographs used could be better.

Wonderful Exposure to Sights Old and New (To Me) 26 Aug. 2013
By Alexandra S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I was really excited to read this book. With only four years in NYC under my belt, there are a wealth of places I have yet to discover and a few that I pass often but have never known why or when to duck in. This seems to me to be a nice introduction to many of the more timeless locations that New Yorkers have been enjoying for generations.

While the book is well-rounded and enjoyable, some of the locations listed do not seem particularly worthwhile outside of their historic status. Discussing the book with a friend who has lived here over ten years, her response was that places like Serendipity 3 and the Grand Central Oyster Bar are fun for a birthday or an occasion, but not necessarily the places you go when you want - you know - good food! I feel the same about places like Glaser's: nice if you're in the area, but not necessarily the most delectable eclair or prune danish in the city.

The reason you're going to these places, presumably, is atmosphere and not a rigid foodie agenda. On that basis, there are many pleasant and memorable trips possible through the stories and guidance offered here.

Fun and Fantastic book! 10 July 2013

Everything you wanted to know about NYC that you didn't even know existed! I frequent NYC often and through Mr. Broders writings, I realized how much I was actually missing. I LOVED reading about the little and big hide aways and new (at least to me) cool eateries. Great book and would highly recommend not only to tourists who want to get away from the tourist traps, but also to NY'ers who had no idea about these gems.

Discovering Vintage NY 11 Sept. 2013
By Ronald - Published on Amazon.com

Some of the places reviewed were fairly interesting. Mostly eateries were reviewed. I was interested in a more diverse selection of shops! Also, more information, locale, websites, etc., could have been included on each site!

A Nostalgic Pleasure 14 Aug. 2013
By Robert Levy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The word Nostalgia has roots in the Greek word Nostos, meaning homecoming. And to an old New Yorker, living far from the sights, smells, and sounds of his beloved The five boroughs, that is what this book is; a homecoming. Mitch Broder has chosen truly representative places in New York that have stood the test of time. Establishments that any true New Yorker knows like a comfy chair. I was happy to see not just restaurants and bars, but bookstores and news stands represented. I purchased the book because one of my old hangouts is right on the cover. How happy was I to find some interesting places in these pages I have not been to yet but they are on my list for my next trip home.

As for Non-Gothomites or New York Newbies, this book is a great travel guide-a checklist for the traveler to get to know New York beyond Moma and Madison Square Garden.

Awesome book! 17 July 2013
By Todd Lerner - Published on Amazon.com

This is EXACTLY what the magic of New York City is all about! Having lived in Manhattan for many years, I can say that this is not only a well-written and fun book to read and look through... it really might be the only reference book anyone visiting the city needs.
