Hot on the heels of the 3rd edition of Andy Field's award-winning Discovering Statistics Using SPSS comes this brand new version for students using SAS®. Andy has teamed up with a co-author, Jeremy Miles, to adapt the book with all the most up-to-date commands and programming language from SAS® 9.2. If you're using SAS®, this is the only book on statistics that you will need!

The book provides a comprehensive collection of statistical methods, tests and procedures, covering everything you're likely to need to know for your course, all presented in Andy's accessible and humourous writing style. Suitable for those new to statistics as well as students on intermediate and more advanced courses, the book walks students through from basic to advanced level concepts, all the while reinforcing knowledge through the use of SAS®.

A 'cast of characters' supports the learning process throughout the book, from providing tips on how to enter data in SAS® properly to testing knowledge covered in chapters interactively, and 'real world' and invented examples illustrate the concepts and make the techniques come alive.

The book's companion website (see link above) provides students with a wide range of invented and real published research datasets. Lecturers can find multiple choice questions and PowerPoint slides for each chapter to support their teaching.

Very useful 22 Oct 2010
By Susie
Format:Paperback
This is the third book I have read in my efforts to learn SAS and it is the best. I found it very useful for helping me learn SAS and understand some of the statistics which I need to use as part of my research. The author works in psychology so it covers a lot of standard statistics used in psychology and other social sciences, unfortunately it does not cover survival analysis.

Great Value 18 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This book has a lot of information explained in a simple to understand language. I thought it was great value for the price. Must have if you use SAS a lot for data analysis.

Well done 24 April 2010
By K. Edell - Published on Amazon.com

I've read a few chapters so far, and have found the material to be explained in a way that even us stats-challenged people can understand. However, I'm curious about when the companion Web site will be up. I want to play around with some of the book's examples, but I need to have access to the data sets. I hope the site is up soon. (Also, it's disappointing that, unlike the SPSS versions of the book, this version is not printed in color.)

Disapointing - there are programming errors, also no companion website 28 Nov 2010
By Joan Delise - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am returning this book. I began with the chapter on ANCOVA and found that syntax for the sample program the authors provide produces the wrong sum of squares, because the variables are entered into the model statement incorrectly. Also, the Sage publications website promises a companion website, but check this out before you consider buying. All that is offered is a poorly constructed, difficult to search through .doc file. False advertising. A doc file is not a website. The construction of the book is flimsy, even more flimsy than the SPSS version of this book. Also the pages are not glossy or color like Field's SPSS book, they are dull, low quality paper and eyesore to look at. Save your money.

I do recommend the SPSS version of this book, which is very helpful. I would recommend purchasing the SPSS book instead, and searching online to find the syntax for the types of programs you want to run using SAS.

Hope the next edition will be better!

Best statistics book I've ever read! 20 Jan 2011
By GradStudentChrissy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is probably one of the funniest books I've ever read. And that's saying a lot considering it's not a fiction or biography book. Field's comical examples actually make you want to keep reading...yes, reading about statistics! There are easy to understand explanations for almost every statistical situation a researcher would encounter. He covers the basic terminology, how to explore data with graphs, testing of assumptions, correlation, regression, logistic regression, t-tests, ANOVA (GLM1), analysis of covariance, factorial analysis, repeated-measures designs, mixed designs, non-parametric tests, multivariate analysis, and others. And with the help of Miles, he provides SAS codes for each test! Hallelujah!
I would recommend this book to not only students in a statistics course, but for both biological and social science researchers.
Let me put it this way...this book is saving my dissertation. I'm not a statistician; I'm an immunologist. My PhD research project, which started as testing for a set of genes, has now turned into a full-blown scoring system to predict kidney transplant rejection. I'm using logistic regression to study three different populations and then developing two different scoring systems for use by clinicians. "You want me to do what in Excel???" "SAS? You want me to be sassy??" Thank you Andy and Jeremy! You'll both be in my acknowledgments!
