Book Description

12 Mar 2007
A small church nestling deep in the countryside is instantly evocative. Why is it there at all? Whom does it serve? This companion volume to the author's successful 'Discovering the Smallest Churches in Wales' covers almost 50 churches in Wales which have naves of 30ft or less. The churches are selected from the whole of the principality, north, mid and south, and are arranged by county. Some like Pilleth are on battlefield sites, others such as Llanano have magnificent screens. The book, which is lavishly illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs, drawings and location maps, will appeal both to those living in Wales and to visitors.

John Kinross and his wife explored the smallest churches of Wales from their home base in Hereford, sometimes staying nights away. It is recommended that the traveller wishing to visit all of the churches should take three weeks, and what a wonderful holiday that would make! This short book is equipped with maps, plenty of photographs and sketches, and chatty accounts of visits to the churches, with brief architectural notes, descriptions of any interesting features such as a notable screen or memorial monuments. Where churches are mentioned by Kilvert in his diary, we are told. I particularly liked the balance between history and travel writing. We are told how to find the churches, with cheery asides about cows in the field by the muddy footpath, or it being a very cold day when they visited, which made a connection for me. At the back is a section with details of Trusts which care for small, 'redundant' churches, and how to support their work. I hope the book generates a great deal of interest in these havens of peace and antiquity, such as they deserve.I also have books on Welsh chapels, and Welsh holy wells and sacred springs, so were I to combine these three interests, basing my travels on Kinross's book, I should be assured of a most congenial time. This book is happiness distilled!

4.0 out of 5 stars Attractive and well illustrated 1 Jun 2010

Format:Paperback
This is an attractively produced book which is well set out and illustrated. It gives precise location information and concise architectural descriptions of the buildings and of any notable features. Important monuments in the buildings are also outlined and a brief account of the structural history is set out. Unfortunately this reader was disappointed that there were only few hints about how these buildings function (or functioned in the past) as centres for worshipping communities and that is surely more interesting and important than bricks and mortar, however picturesque. Nevertheless, it would be harsh to criticise this beautiful book for failing to achieve something it never set out to attempt.
