Pompeii has been a magnetic lure to travellers to Italy since its discovery in the eighteenth century. Its tragic and dramatic end froze a piece of the Roman Empire in time, allowing us a glimpse into ordinary Roman life.
It's a large site, and the temptation to race around trying to see everything is strong. As a veteran visitor of many an archaeological site, I can vouch for how exhausting that approach can be. Natasha Sheldon's Discovering Pompeii takes a different tack, focusing on the Via dell'Abbondanza, the Street of Abundance, and a fascinating tour it is.
The Via dell'Abbondanza is Pompeii in miniature, complete with public baths, shops, grand houses, taverns, a bakery, a gladiator training school and a vineyard. All of Pompeian life is here. Amply illustrated with pictures and maps, Discovering Pompeii has all the information you need for an in-depth visit to Pompeii. I wish I'd had it when I visited!
