5.0 out of 5 stars A Walk Back In Time 15 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The author Natasha Sheldon begins her guide book of some 80 pages entitled, "Discovering Pompeii" by telling us that: "Pompeii is a must see sight for many of Campania's tourists. Its tragic and dramatic end, coupled with the chance to explore the houses, temples, bathhouses and brothels of an ancient city is for many too strong a lure to resist."
There are some 20 Points of Interest along the author's tour guide starting at "The Via Dell Abbondanza" and taking you all the way through to the " Spectacula- Pompeii's Amphitheatre". Opening times, current ticket prices as well as cautionary advice regarding criminality around the bay of Naples are included. The author tells us that during high summer, sensible precautions such as a good sunhat, decent walking shoes and carrying some water with you is a must.
Reading through the step by step easy on the eye pages, I found this guide book very straightforward and easy to follow with several maps, illustrations and colour photographs taken by the author at the site herself. I found her interpretation of the architecture that went into the homes in Pompeii fascinating as well as helpful to know. To me it was like walking a step back in time and imagining how Roman life was in Pompeii all those years ago. You can even have a sense of the local smells of those sights like the bakery as the author shows creativity, passion and realism in her descriptive work. Of interest to me was the The House of Paquius Proculusan at Point 8 of the guide book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pompeii tour with a focus 9 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Pompeii has been a magnetic lure to travellers to Italy since its discovery in the eighteenth century. Its tragic and dramatic end froze a piece of the Roman Empire in time, allowing us a glimpse into ordinary Roman life.

It's a large site, and the temptation to race around trying to see everything is strong. As a veteran visitor of many an archaeological site, I can vouch for how exhausting that approach can be. Natasha Sheldon's Discovering Pompeii takes a different tack, focusing on the Via dell'Abbondanza, the Street of Abundance, and a fascinating tour it is.

The Via dell'Abbondanza is Pompeii in miniature, complete with public baths, shops, grand houses, taverns, a bakery, a gladiator training school and a vineyard. All of Pompeian life is here. Amply illustrated with pictures and maps, Discovering Pompeii has all the information you need for an in-depth visit to Pompeii. I wish I'd had it when I visited!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very light introductory overview 5 Sept. 2013
By María - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is a nicely conducted introduction to everyday life in Pompei. However, although it includes here and there some nice and curious comments, it is rather incomplete for a Guide: It focuses on Via dell'Abondanza buildings to briefly illustrate the different topics and does not include the rest of the city. Not even the main forum. Besides that, I guess that -given Mrs. Sheldon academic background and the 5* comments- I was expecting deeper and more "technical" explanations. Fortunately, I did not rely on it to guide my visit.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Total Pompeii expereince 31 Aug. 2013
By B.McConnell - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
"Discovering Pompeii" is the total guide for not only any visitor to the city, but for anyone curious about the ancient world. With detailed instruction about directions, what to bring, and what to see, this guide can certainly turn any trip into an informative and enjoyable experience. Natasha Sheldon deftly switches between descriptions of the modern site and ancient times for every stop along the way, giving readers a grander scope of history while maintaining a very human feel to the lives of the people who inhabited Pompeii generations ago. "Discovering Pompeii" is simultaneously highly professional and easily accessible. The beautiful pictures act as great guide markers, or for readers at home, help teleport you to the sites you want to see. I was impressed and entertained, and recommend this to any aspiring traveler or history enthusiast.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 18 July 2013

Natasha's tour "Discovering Pompeii" is an excellent overview exemplifying life in Pompeii before the famous eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. She begins with helpful information for tourists and current maps. The tour is well organized and academically accurate, without becoming too boring. The facts she has chosen to address are fluidly presented and interesting, making this tour fun as well as informative. This tour is one you will want to share and discuss afterwards, perhaps inspiring you to learn more. In fact, this tour could be used as a supplement in classrooms at any academic level. This reader was inspired to inspect Ms. Sheldon's website to read more about ancient history.
