Wendy Mewes' illuminating book on Brittany is a must for those who have more than a passing interest in this unique part of France. Here, the difficult and often heroic history of its fiercely independent and religious people, as they suffer the attentions of a seemingly unending queue of predators, not least amongst whom are the rich and powerful in Paris, comes alive in a very clear and compelling way.

All that one needs to know about the mysterious stone structures, Brittany's close Celtic connections with Cornwall, characters such as the brutal Conomor, the clever Salomon, the valiant Bertrand, the inspirational Anne of Brittany, not to mention the turbulent and chaotic times of the Revolution, is contained in little more than a hundred pages, with copious colour photos and black and white illustrations.

This is the perfect companion not only for the visitor to Brittany but also for those who simply enjoy history presented with intelligence, erudition and clarity.

5.0 out of 5 stars An attractive history book! 15 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Unusually for a history book, this one is attractively presented, with sketches and colour photos liberally scattered throughout its pages. It is readable, too - perhaps not from cover to cover in one go, but certainly the sections into which it is divided each provide good browsing material. For British families living in Brittany, this book must be almost essential reading, and even those who (like ourselves) love this region and visit it frequently will probably find here lots of interesting snippets to add spice to their holidays.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Brittany history 16 Aug 2006
By Stephen J. Leighton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you're visiting Brittany and want a brief, clear, well written and well illustrated introduction to the history of the area, from prehistoric times to modern day, then this is it. If you're not planning to visit Brittany, then this book will likely persuade you to do so.
