4.0 out of 5 stars Different LP 26 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Buyer of LP for a long time since they have useful maps. This book is slightly different than your average LP. To start of it is in full colour. Clear font and text. Usual LP instruction - map, recommendation for hotel, eating place. But seemed more compact. There's more consice Best things to do in Luxor (in Luxor section) and Highlights of Luxor, The Best bits of Luxor. So less information on the place itself but more of advise to go. For example no pages and pages about one place of interest rather than tell you briefly this place is good to go. To be honest, you probably better off either getting a tour guide or proper info book on those things rather than relying on LP. So I actually quite like this LP format book. It's now more like a proper guide book - where it guides but not much overload of information which sometimes LP annoyingly does it's biasness on certain places in the country. Good buy I would say!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read full of facts 22 Feb 2011

We used this book to help with planning ahead of ou trip. It covered the main locations and some undiscovered type places that were less mainstream. It was very informative, especially about Luxor, the pyramids. I like to do diving, and fortunately the book also covers some useful areas to visit for that too. The books gives a sense of the local culture and helps you prepare for entering the country. Its worth a buy if you are planning to visit Egypt anytime soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guide, but what's missing? 17 Feb 2011
By Darren Simons TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Discover is a new set of guides sold by Lonely Planet designed specifically for travellers who do not want as much in-depth information about where they are visiting, but instead want more information about the can't miss opportunities.

As a guide in itself, this one's very good. Maps are clear, all the major cities and sites are detailed, there's some ideas for restaurants and accommodation and lots about the main sites. Best of all it's in colour, and feels a bit more sturdy (less likely to get tatty by the time you have finished your travels).

For me though, I couldn't help feel I was missing something though. I don't have the old Lonely Planet Egypt book so can't make a direct comparison but I couldn't help but think some of the information missing would have been of value. So often it's those little off-the-beaten-track locations which can be the highlight of the holiday and I suspect that's what's missing.

Overall, this is a good guide and new series of guides, especially if you are going for a weekend away and will only have time for the tourist stuff. That said, you could just as easily extract the information from the older book and decide yourself what to do.

I would have given this 3/5 as I do somewhat question the value, but the fact that it's in colour and very clear to read got it an extra point!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction 28 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have been an indpendent traveller for 25 years and have used many, many guidebooks over this time. To be honest, I was expecting this book to be a rather useless and lightweight "taster" guide but it has pleasantly surprised me.

First of all its a real pleasure to read and flick through. There are lots and lots of decent photos that give an impression of the place (albeit a nicely sanitised version). Its also set into clear geographic sections that are easy to navigate and make sense of. It doesnt take long to get a good basic orientation to the country as a whole, and what each area has to offer.

Secondly the information in here is genuinely helpful and it manages to provide a lot in a small amount of words. It gives a good balance of advice, some focused on the bigger view regarding history, culture and helpful itineries, and some focused on small local details such as the best times of day to see specific sites and best cafes to try.

I would say that it is particularly good as a guide to seeing the Ancient Egyptian sites across the whole country. But more average when it comes to the country's other attractions such as the Red Sea area and adventures with the Beduin and Nubian tribes.

Where it's not good is providing many recomendations for accomodation. But then to be fair its not really that kind of guide, as there is no way you could fit that amount of info into this size of book. And lets face it, Trip Advisor is becomming the best resource for this kind of knowledge.

So, if you imagine a cross between a Time Out city guide, combined with a Discovery Channel coffeetable guide, with a little bit of Rough Guide helpfulness, condensed into 300 pages, then this is what this book is like.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best 23 Mar 2011
By Alison Towers VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Always reliable and essential on any journey. Lonely Planet's 'Discover Egypt' does not disappoint. I love the layout and the clear print that enables speedy location of information, and the illustrations and general clarity of maps and street plans. The glossaries are very helpful and appropriate. The accomodatio sections are not as extensive as other books from this series that I have in my collection, but I now tend to depend on website comparison sites these days, so this change actually makes sense. Lonely Planet has usually been my first choice and this is a notable and useful addition.
