What a beautiful book! The waterfalls, the wildlife, the beaches, the sunsets, the colourful culture (gotta love those oxcarts!) - rarely have I read a holiday guide containing such wonderful eye-candy!
Drill-down and there's plenty of the usual Lonely Planet informative stuff about where to stay, what to do, food and drink and (importantly) potential pitfalls for travellers.
Has it tempted me to put Costa Rica on my holiday short-list for 2011? You bet!

Really good book. I strongly recommend it!! I always buy the lonely planet from the country we are going to. I have a real collection. For reading I prefer the Footprint guides though. Lonely Planet guides are somewhat of a dry summery of facts. Not these new Discovery Guides!! Full color, nice background stories, good pictures. Also very nice sugestions on itineraries. All in all I would say go buy it you won't regret it.

As I'm off to Costa Rica shortly this has been instrumental in discovering places to visit in the areas that I'm visiting so that I don't get to places and then waste time thinking "Now what?".
It highlights all the possible places to see which you might never find on your own (not without more time than I'll have there) so just by saving me time it's also saving me money.
The book is packed with colour (it says on the cover 'Full Color') and it is actually true.
Minus one star because only a few places to stay are mentioned. I think that if the publisher is going to only pick and choose it gives a false impression. Either list them all (as far as possible) or omit them all.
That notwithstanding, you would be mad not to get this book if you're intending to travel to Costa Rica.
Highly recommended.

This book is great if you are thinking about going or traveling with a company. But if you're traveling around and need information about hostels etc, buy the other one. Read more
