Brilliant 3 Jun 2011
By Kabbage
Format:Paperback
This book is fantastic - somehow Lonely Planet have got it right this time... full colour makes all the difference. It's split each area into manageable bite sized chapters and at the start of each area you have a list with pictures about the highlights in each area - saves you trawling through the whole chapter enabling you to pinpoint what you might like. Then of course there's all the details in the chapter about where to stay and eat etc, like the normal Lonely PLanet books. I'd buy this any day over a rough guide, which doesn't have quite as many options for accomodation, although the blurb on areas is much the same.

Just loving the easy way you can get all excited over your trip with the great overviews and highlights in colour - it's also colour coded on the pages, so you can flip easily to a section + it has suggestions like, if you liked xyz place, you might like... fantastic, love it, well done LP!

Recently on a trip across California, I was looking for one book to cover the entire place a difficult task that this Travel Guide accomplished well and in a good level of detail throughout. Now in full colour and with detailed sections for Los Angeles and San Francisco separate to the rest of the book this book begins with an excellent overall view of the diversity of things to see and look out for when you are "Discovering California,". It then goes into each area in detail with attractions, restaurants, hotels and excursions for all budgets. While I often found the prices had increased significantly from those quoted in the book, the recommendations were generally accurate and well placed.

A complete guide to such as large a diverse area is difficult but Lonely Planet have taken this task on and produced an excellent travel guide that I used almost every page of. Definitely recommended if your visiting places outside the major cities otherwise think about DK's Top 10 guides for the cities your visiting instead.

Handy guide but... 3 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I am a big Lonely Planet fan, and sometimes find the traditional guide books a bit too comprehensive for a short trip e.g. 2 week holiday not a 2 month trip. This 'discover'series is more holiday-friendly, with colour too, however I did find that if planning to stay more than a day or two in one place you need to supplement it with a bigger / more detailed book. e.g. for the cities such as San Francisco, its probably worth getting a book for the city in its own right as there is so much to see /do.
