Catherine is a typical A-grade student from a middle class, high-achieving family, who suddenly, on entering the sixth form, loses her way. She stumbles from one situation to another, unable to work and turning to alcohol to take her mind off her problems. As she searches for answers through the varied and offbeat characters she meets, she learns a great many truths about life. Can she cope with the biggest truth of all - her own personality? Written in the first person, each chapter is addressed to someone different in Catherine's life - her mother, a teacher, a schoolfriend etc, and reflects how Catherine is different to different people. It brilliantly reflects the pressures on young people today in a world where they haven't got the time to grow up at their own pace. Is the face we present to the world our true self, or a carefully maintained construct?

I felt extremely hypocritical reading this book being as the main character, Cathy Holmes, could have been based upon me, or any 17 year old with half a brain. The way the middle classes are attacked by the girl seem so wasted and pointless because at the end of the day, that is where she belongs.
However, the way the story goes full circle and shows Cathy for just another middle class kid gives the story such honesty and realism that made it seem almost non-fictional.
The epistolary style gives the book an ease to read, and break it up so you never get bored, and you get see how the story is told when being directed at a different audience.
Not the best book I'll ever read but I feel I gained alot from reading it

I stumbled across this book whilst browsing amazon and knew immediately that I had to buy it. I spent most of my 2 years in 6th form feeling the same way as Cat - In fact, her words could so easily have come straight from my own mouth (if only I was that eloquent). This book illustrates perfectly just how easy it is to take for granted that you 'should' follow a certain path in life and more importantly, just how scary it is to suddenly realise that there is more to life and that that path may not be right for you!

Ever sat and thought, "I just can't be bothered" or gone to pick up your books and instantly felt too tired to study.

I know. I'm there right now. Upon reading a review for this book, I picked it up and was instantly hooked. It seemed to be all the thoughts in my head written down in continuous monologue.

It made me laugh a few times with just how accurately this title hit the nail on the head. We study all our lives (up until now) just o get a place at Uni. so we can study more.

Although it is written from girl's perspective, I can relate to allot if not all of its contents.

On the more positive side, it makes you realise that there are some things in life that make it worth living and that everything is worth the effort in the end.
