Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

The first solo album from ex-Wedding Present singer David Gedge, Cinerama's Va Va Voom saw the swarthy singer try to loosen ties with his past. Gone were the layers of guitars. In their place were Lightning Seeds-esque keyboards and a sound that owed far more to the symphonic pop of Burt Bacharach than to Gedge's former indie heroes Edwyn Collins' Orange Juice. For its follow-up, Disco Volante, Gedge has called in old Weddoes (and Nirvana/Shellac) producer Steve Albini--and the result is a sound that lies halfway between his new-found pop sensibility and the old abrasion. Accordions, brass and strings flesh out the layers of guitar on songs like the tender single "Lollobrigida", while the soaring "Let's Pretend" recalls the Franco-pop of Stereolab in Sally Murrell's backing vocals. Gedge is still the unrequited romantic: obsessed with love in all its myriad forms, whether organic ("Heels", "Your Charms") or more ethereal (the exhilarating rush of "Wow"). This is an album that should please both old fans and new. --Jerry Thackray

It may seem odd, but my introduction to the Wedding present came via my old Biology teacher who had a dalliance with Mr Gedge many many years ago, unlike her i have grown to appeciate his talents more as the years have gone on. Disco Volante is a superb CD, it can make you happy when sad, sad when happy and more than anything it can make you smile and hum along. Buy it! if only to pull funny faces to as you scream along to 'WoW' in the car in the same way you did to 'kennedy' back in the day. It will get in your head and disrupt your studies or meetings and for that reason alone it needs to be heard.

Following on from the brilliant Va Va Voom. Gedge delivers even more mellow and 'can't stop humming that tune' songs. From the single 'Lollobrigida' to the wonderful 'Apres ski' this is a marvellous album.
This release may just be a continuation from where he left off on 'Va Va Voom', but David Gedge tells us in 'Your time starts now' - "Yeah I've heard it all before, No, I don't care anymore" and I couldn't agree more!

That Dave Gedge who cannot sing a note? Some sort of voice-transplant must have occurred. A powerful selection of mainly feelgood songs, with a rough edge, though not quite so rough as the Wedding Present. He even hits the high notes perfectly.
Still as lyrically perfect as ever, with a somewhat Pulp sounding influence - both in words and music. Certainly, there are 3 only other people who can get away with such bizarre lyrics: Jarvis Cocker, David Byrne, and to a less arty extent, Shaun Ryder.

Since the release of George Best, by the Wedding Present, in 1987 I have loved the song crafting of David Gedge. Like Va Va Voom (1998), Disco Volante is one of the most listenable albums to come from this master of the witty & wry love song. I saw them play live in Amsterdam in January 99 and they blew main act of the stage! This new recording whets the appetite for a good live performance. Buy this album now!
